On this special report, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw details India’s ambitious semiconductor strategy to host Raj Chengappa. He stated, ‘What is important, as our prime minister said, is that we should not be looking at the bus we missed, but must now become the drivers of this bus.’ The discussion covers the government’s ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to reverse decades of missed opportunities and reduce the 95% import dependency on chips. Vaishnaw outlines the plan to build a complete ecosystem, including design, fabrication (fab), and packaging (ATMP). He confirms that 10 units are underway, featuring major investments from Tata in partnership with PSMC for a fab in Dholera, and a significant ATMP facility by Micron in Gujarat. The minister highlights that India is now attracting critical global players like ASML and fostering cutting-edge design work, such as ARM’s 2nm chip design in Bengaluru.
