Shubman Gill brought up his 10th Test hundred, leading India’s charge on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The 26-year-old continued his golden run with the bat as captain, notching up his fifth hundred while wearing the armband. Gill reached the three-figure mark in front of a healthy Delhi crowd during the second session on Saturday.

With his fifth Test hundred as captain, Gill surpassed Rohit Sharma and equalled MS Dhoni’s tally for the most hundreds as captain of the Indian Test team. He scored four centuries in his maiden series as Test captain in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. | IND vs WI, 2nd Test Day 2 Updates |

Virat Kohli remains at the top with 20 hundreds as India’s Test captain, followed by Sunil Gavaskar with 11 and Mohammad Azharuddin with nine.

Gill celebrated his century by removing his helmet and acknowledging the crowd’s applause. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen giving a standing ovation from the dressing room at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. He reached his hundred in 177 deliveries, striking 13 boundaries and a six.

After missing out on a big score in the series opener in Ahmedabad, Gill made the most of the batter-friendly conditions in Delhi. It was a fine display of composure and focus from the captain, who overcame the disappointment of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out on 175 earlier in the day to pile on the runs for India.

Gill also emulated Virat Kohli for most hundreds in a calendar year by a Test captain. Virat had scored five hundreds twice – once each in 2017 and 2018.

MOST HUNDREDS AS INDIA’S TEST CAPTAIN

    1. Virat Kohli – 20
    2. Sunil Gavaskar – 11
    3. Mohammad Azharuddin – 9
    4. Sachin Tendulkar – 7
    5. Shubman Gill – 5*
    6. MS Dhoni – 5
    7. Sourav Ganguly – 5
    8. Mansoor Ali khan Pataudi – 5
    9. Rahul Dravid – 4
    10. Rohit Sharma – 4

After India saw three centurions in the Ahmedabad Test — KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja — two names seemed missing from that list. Both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill made sure to set the record straight in Delhi, dominating proceedings across two days. While Jaiswal’s century was the talking point of Day 1, Day 2 belonged entirely to India’s captain, whose innings combined a confusing mix-up with a composed masterclass in stroke play.

India’s Day 2 did not start ideally. Within half an hour of play, a horror mix-up between Jaiswal and Gill led to the young opener’s run-out on 175. Many had expected Jaiswal to push for a double century, and his dismissal left fans disappointed. Criticism quickly fell on Gill, though the fault was not entirely his.

Gill, however, did not let the incident rattle him. He kept the scoreboard moving at a fine pace through the day, finding able support from Nitish Kumar Reddy, who had been promoted to No. 5 and played with similar intent. The duo maintained India’s momentum through the morning session.
