India troubled by left-arm spinners in World Cup? Sneh Rana plays down concerns

Sneh Rana has played down concerns about India’s struggles against left-arm spin in the ongoing World Cup. After finding it tough against Inoka Ranaweera and Nashra Sandhu in the matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the Indian batters also faced difficulties against South Africa’s Nonkululeko Mlaba and Chloe Tryon.

Since 2023, no team has lost more wickets to left-arm spinners in ODIs than India. On Sunday, October 12, India will face Australia in Vizag, where there’s a strong possibility of encountering Sophie Molineux, who missed the game against Pakistan.

Rana said the Indian team has quality batters capable of overcoming their current challenges.

“I don’t think it’s a big concern. Our batters have handled such situations well in the past, and ups and downs are part and parcel of the game. As you know, we have some of the best batters in the world on our side, and I’m confident they’ll bounce back strongly,” Rana told the reporters in a pre-match press conference.

    Clear plans against Australia

Rana, who recently featured in the bilateral ODI series against Australia and has faced them in the past, said the Aussies are expected to come hard at India. However, she added that the Indian team has already devised its plans to counter the seven-time champions.

“As you said, the World Cup is a completely different stage, and the pressure is unique. We’ve studied Australia’s style over the years — they’re aggressive — but our plans are very clear. We’ve had detailed discussions and made our strategies, and hopefully, we can make a positive start,” Rana added.

India began their campaign with comprehensive wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka before losing to South Africa by three wickets. They are currently placed third on the points table with four points and a net run rate of +0.953, having won two of their three matches.
