Fifteen years ago, Dolby was a name Indian audiences recognized only from Hollywood film credits. Today, it’s a badge on Indian televisions, cars, phones, and theatres. Sameer Seth, who has witnessed this transformation up close, charts Dolby’s evolution from a sound innovator to a lifestyle presence across India. “When we launched our Indian subsidiary in 2010, the ecosystem was undergoing a massive upgrade,” Seth recalled.
Sameer Seth traces Dolby’s incredible growth story in India; says, “2012 changed cinema forever”
A turning point came when Dolby partnered with Star India on the launch of its HD channels. “That was our first big moment – the ‘Asli HD’ campaign brought Dolby Surround Sound into Indian homes,” he said, calling it the moment India began to hear television differently.
Seth’s eyes light up when he recalls the next milestone. “December 12, 2012 – we opened our first Dolby Atmos screen at Satyam, Chennai. The first Indian title mixed in Atmos was Sivaji 3D.” From there, the growth was exponential. Indian filmmakers quickly realized that Atmos wasn’t just a technology – it was a storytelling tool. Audiences began expecting the ‘Dolby’ tag to guarantee an elevated cinema experience.
By 2014, the next frontier was clear. “We brought Dolby Vision HDR to India,” Seth explained. “We collaborated with global and Indian OEMs to make Dolby Vision and Atmos accessible in living rooms across the country.” From LED TVs to streaming platforms and smart speakers, Dolby’s experience moved from the big screen to the small one – and in the process, became part of daily entertainment.
In recent years, Dolby has gone mobile – literally. “Our journey in the automotive space began with Mahindra’s born-electric vehicles,” Seth said. “We’ve now expanded to five models on Indian roads – that’s a very proud India moment.” Dolby’s reach now extends into EVs and luxury cars, where immersive sound systems redefine the drive itself.
Seth’s approach to growth is not about numbers alone. “We look at trial, engagement, advocacy,” he said. “How many people have experienced Dolby for the first time? How many recommended it? How many now choose a Dolby-enabled device?” It’s a philosophy of progress that’s more about loyalty and impact than just market share.
From the first HD broadcast to immersive cinematic universes and EV dashboards, Dolby’s growth in India has mirrored India’s own digital leap. For Sameer Seth, that journey is far from over – “We’re just getting started,” he smiled.
