The writer, mother and essayist was taken back to the time when she dealt with repetitive pregnancy loss and had four miscarriages, saw 10 varied specialists and had given up on the hope of being a mom. However, Amy had seen Hilaria’s heartbreaking post about her second pregnancy loss in a year, and she stopped.

Her dreams were broken, and the cloud of sadness did not go. Amy’s pregnancies often had hopes such as heartbeat detections and early milestones. According to a report by Business Insider, in one particular pregnancy, she had crossed the six-week mark, an ultrasound had earlier revealed a heartbeat, and then it was not found. Amy Klein’s first marriage happened when she was six weeks pregnant
Amy’s losses were not just physical; they were emotional as well, as she had lost hope. All four of her miscarriages brought her grief, shame and questions such as why was this happening to her and if she had missed something medically. The first time Amy was pregnant, she saw blood in the toilet when she was going to the gynaecologist to confirm the pregnancy, which was six weeks. In her book, according to the publication, she said:
Oh well,” I thought. “I guess it was just a late period. Maybe I wasn’t pregnant after all. Even when the doctor told me I actually had been pregnant, and had suffered a “chemical miscarriage,” — one not confirmed by an ultrasound I still didn’t feel like it was really a loss at that point.

The doctor had then told Amy to try again, and she was cheerful. When Amy became pregnant for the second time, she waited a full cycle and had also stopped doing yoga, drinking. She said that side twists during the first trimester were forbidden. Amy did not want to mess up the pregnancy, and the pregnancy was confirmed at five weeks. The author listened to the heartbeats and the pretty sound. Amy had come for her 10 week ultrasound and advised her husband to not come with her. This was because she needed her husband for more than nine months for the ultrasound. She and her husband were scrolling through Facebook, selecting baby names until when the doctor cleared her throat and said:
“I’m sorry. I don’t hear a heartbeat.”
Amy did say there was no blood, but the doctor told her it was a silent miscarriage, and her mind froze. The doctor said that a fetus can stop growing without the mother having symptoms, and the author missed her own miscarriage. The second loss was painful for her as she had heard the heartbeat.

Amy and her husband had imagined life with kids, and in her office, she had told everyone she was expecting, but now she was not. She had also undergone a procedure where her uterine lining was cleared. Her womb was empty, and she did the test to know if her fetus was chromosomally normal. From OB-GYNS to fertility experts, immunologists, and endocrinologists, the author visited everyone to know what was abnormal. Her issue was with staying pregnant, and during this time, she had two miscarriages. Amy shared:
“Over the next two years, I suffered two more miscarriages. They were all kinds of awful.”
After four miscarriages, Amy Klein was blessed with a daughter
Amy’s fifth pregnancy survived, and according to a report by Forward.com, miscarriage specialist, Dr Braverman told her that she won’t be happy until she holds her baby in her arms. It was her tenth doctor, and this pregnancy had crossed the 10-week mark, entering the second trimester, which led to the third and fourth trimesters, culminating in the birth. Amy had earlier shared that there were nights when she used to listen to her daughter breathe, and at times she was also reminded of being in the ultrasound room with cold jelly on her flat belly for a badump bump sound that actually never came.
When Amy held her daughter, the feeling was something she could not describe. Her daughter gave her hope of motherhood, as miscarriage is something that affects the mind, leading one to depression and anxiety. Every new pregnancy can feel like it is the end of the world. Any saw light at the end of the tunnel when there was no disappointment of not hearing a heartbeat as her daughter ended her grief. Post visiting ten specialists, reportedly having nine IVF treatments, Amy was blessed with a healthy daughter.
