Israelis gathered across the country on Tuesday to remember the victims of the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, which claimed over 1,200 lives and saw 251 people taken hostage, many taken back to Gaza. The day, the deadliest for Jews since the Holocaust, has left a lasting mark on the nation, with memorials, ceremonies, and moments of reflection honoring those lost. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the country’s response as marked by “immense pain” but also “miraculous resilience.”
As Israel mourns, indirect peace talks between Israel and Hamas continue in Egypt, aiming to address the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Since the attack, Israel’s military offensive has resulted in more than 67,000 deaths in the territory, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, with figures recognised by the UN and other international bodies.
