Ayushmann Khurrana had an interesting conversation with journalist Mayank Shekhar on day 1 of the silver jubilee edition of FICCI Frames 2025 at a five-star hotel in Mumbai on the choice of his films and a lot more. Ayushmann is known to be a disruptor, and he spoke about this as well.
FICCI Frames 2025: Ayushmann Khurrana says, “I didn’t say yes to Article 15. I GRABBED it”; reveals Anubhav Sinha first offered him a rom-com: “I told him, Sir, aap jis raaste pe chal rahe ho…’”
Ayushmann Khurrana stated, “We are in the business of selling emotions. That’s for sure. There is no formula. The only formula is to break every formula! Also, the formula changes every five years. Whatever is relevant right now may completely be irrelevant five years down the line. At the same time, there’s another formula of staying rooted as much as possible. Be Indian to stay relevant. The more connected you are to the grassroots, the more relevant you’ll be.”
He continued, “I have taken baby steps. I was a student of journalism. I did radio, television and theatre. Saying ‘no’ is the most difficult part especially at the onset of your career. You have to go with your conviction and your intuition. However, saying yes to Article 15 (2019) changed the perception. I was known for light-hearted, social comedies. But Article 15 was a very serious film. It was based on casteism and commercially, it did really well. It was an anomaly.”
Ayushmann revealed, “I didn’t say yes to Article 15. I grabbed it! I had seen Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk (2018) and loved it. He offered me a romcom. I told him, ‘Sir, aap jis raaste pe chal rahe ho, wohi raasta mujhe chahiye’! He had the script for Article 15, but he never thought about me for it. That’s the kind of reinvention I wanted at that time. Article 15 gave me a lot of respect as an artist.”
