Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari marked Akshay Oberoi’s first film with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Interestingly, his entry into the Dharma camp would have happened five years ago. He was signed for KJo’s ambitious directorial venture, Takht. As per the announcement, Takht starred Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. There were reports that Akshay had bagged Takht, but neither of the parties commented on it then. Recently, Akshay Oberoi confessed that he had indeed signed the film and that he was going to play Mughal prince Murad Bakhsh. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the talented actor shared more details about it.
EXCLUSIVE: Akshay Oberoi clarifies after comment on Vivek Oberoi was misinterpreted: “We spoke offline…I’d like to go back to not having any controversies”; reveals he was HEARTBROKEN when Karan Johar’s Takht was shelved: “I wanted to play a Mughal; I look one due to my eyes”
When asked how he felt when Takht was shelved, Akshay confessed, “It was very sad and heartbreaking. Business was down due to Covid and then Takht, the biggest film I had signed, also got stalled. I didn’t know why it happened and whether the film would be made.”
He continued, “I wanted to work with Karan Johar as a director. I wanted to play a Mughal. I feel like I look like one thanks to my eyes and appearance.”
Akshay Oberoi further stated, “In my head, Fighter (2024) was the replacement for Takht as it was a big film with big stars. It was the first film offered to me after the lockdown ended.” Directed by Siddharth Anand, Fighter starred Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles.
At the press conference of Mirai last month, Karan Johar also opened up on shelving Takht, “I had researched that film for 2 ½ years. Sumit Roy wrote the screenplay for it. It was just very heartbreaking when I couldn’t make it at that time. So, I did dabble. I guess har film ka ek waqt hota hai. Naseeb ki bhi baat hoti hai, as to when you can tell that story.”
Meanwhile, Akshay Oberoi has had a controversy-free career, but recently, his comments about his cousin, Vivek Oberoi, were misinterpreted and picked up. Akshay Oberoi remarked that their families were never close and that Vivek never helped him in his career. He also expressed regret that there was no real relationship between their families.
When asked if he had clarified it with Vivek Oberoi, Akshay Oberoi replied, “We spoke offline and that was the right thing to address it. He’s also been through his share of things. He knows that you can’t clarify it through the media. So, we spoke offline. However, I’d like to return to a time when I had no controversies. This was not fun!”
