Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan addressed his experiences of working alongside intimate partners and explained why he believes such collaborations often do not go smoothly. In a recent conversation with Esquire India, Saif, who shared the screen with his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan in a number of films, said that collaborating with “wives and girlfriends” is rarely a good creative formula.

Reflecting on his early career, Saif said: in the ’90s people used to tell him that he was “lucky you’ve got so many chances.” He added that during that era, he was not “getting the best movies in town or being cast as the main lead.”
Over time, Saif said he realized his working style thrives on “healthy competition, riffing off his co-stars.” “That’s why working with wives and girlfriends is not a good idea,” he noted.
Though Saif has acted with Kareena in films such as LOC Kargil (2003), Omkara (2006), Tashan (2008), Kurbaan (2009), Agent Vinod (2012), and Roadside Romeo (voiceover, 2008), he points out that he never shared a project with his ex-wife Amrita Singh.
Looking forward, Saif had previously told Pinkvilla that any future joint venture with Kareena would need to be director-driven. He said, “It will have to be a director who casts us, not because we are husband and wife, but just as actors or casts us against type. It will require a lot of imagination from somebody – they must get it absolutely right and also think out of the box for it to be interesting for both of us. Kareena and I are both working people, and I think to keep life interesting, it is nice to work with other people and live nicely together.”
Saif was last seen in the Netflix film Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, while Kareena will appear next in Daayra, directed by Meghna Gulzar.
