Sriram Raghavan’s highly acclaimed Andhadhun, which starred Ayushmann Khurrana, Radhika Apte and Tabu, completed seven years yesterday. The film was co-written by Hemanth Rao, who is also the director of the brilliant Saptasagaradaache Ello Side A and Side B. He got talking about the experience of writing Andhadhun in an interview with us.

How did the idea for Andhadhun happen?

Sriram and I were dabbling with a few ideas when I came across the short film The Piano Tuner. Sriram saw it and called me late at night…and was like… lets do this, this is fabulous. We just took the hook of the idea and jumped into it from there. Sriram wrote like a one pager and we used that as foundation to build it up.

Was it hard empathizing with a protagonist who lies?

Not really. It’s a great writing challenge to make you side with the characters who have questionable motives. Right from the start, it seemed like a tasty twisty Hitchcockian story to me… with murder, lots of mayhem and mischief tossed in for good measure.

How much of Andhadhun is you and how much of it is Sriram Raghavan?

I think it’s a love child of both. The love and appreciation that the film receives even to this day is amazing. It’s one of those magic tricks about cinema that should never be understood by its makers. The toy stops working if you pull it apart to check where the fun sound is coming from.

Was it difficult collaborating with Sriram?

It wasn’t difficult at all. I have had the most fun working with Sriram. I have learned so so much working on the initial draft of Andhadhun with Sriram. We got stuck post interval. Somehow the doors refused to open when trying to resolve all the madness, so much so that Sriram went away made another film (Badlapur). I went away and made my debut film.

And then got back to the script…unfortunately for me, I couldn’t be part of the second half and the subsequent drafts that Sriram worked on with the other co-writers. But I am so grateful to Sriram that he saw my contributions worthy of sharing credit. Speaks volumes about what an amazing person and film maker he is.

    A sequel to Andhadhun?

I think that is Sriram’s question to answer. I don’t know about sequel but writing again with him would be an absolute joy. I hope the stars align and it happens in the near future.
