Four Indian nationals were killed in a road accident in Matera city in southern Italy, the Indian Embassy in Rome confirmed on Sunday.

The victims were travelling in a seven-seater Renault Scenic along with six others when their vehicle collided with a truck in the municipality of Scanzano Jonico on the Agri Valley road on Saturday, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

According to Italian authorities, the deceased have been identified as Kumar Manoj (34), Singh Surjit (33), Singh Harwinder (31), and Singh Jaskaran (20).

In a post on social media, the Embassy of India in Rome expressed condolences and said, “We are in contact with the local Italian authorities to obtain details. The Embassy will provide all possible consular assistance to the concerned families.”

SIX OTHERS INJURED

Officials said six other passengers in the car sustained injuries. Five of them were admitted to Policoro Hospital in Matera, while the most seriously injured individual was airlifted to San Carlo Hospital in Potenza for advanced treatment.

Italian media reports said the truck driver escaped unharmed and is cooperating with investigators. The victims are believed to have been part of the local migrant workforce, though authorities have yet to confirm their employment status.

The Matera Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.
