Tension flared in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district late last night after stones were thrown during a Durga idol immersion procession. The incident reportedly took place in Bawanbir village of Sangrampur tehsil.
According to information received, the Durga immersion procession was being carried out with enthusiasm in the village. Five Durga mandals were set to pass through the area known as Taj Nagar. While four mandals had already crossed the spot, the incident occurred when the fifth one, Jai Malhar Mandal, was passing by.
Sonal Police Station in-charge Chandrakant Patil told India Today’s sister channel Aaj Tak over the phone that “Jai Malhar Mandal was passing through the area, and some songs were being played by the mandal. Suddenly, stone-throwing began from members of a particular community.” Patil added that five people were injured in the attack.
A case has been registered at Sonala Police Station, and twelve people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident. “Twelve people were detained last night,” Thaneadar Chandrakant Patil confirmed.
The situation in the village is currently under control, and police are investigating the matter further.
