“I kind of appreciate a tame backstage, actually,” Kendall Jenner tells me over Zoom, almost like it’s some sort of embarrassing confession. But she’s talking to somebody in her mid-30s who spent her last weekend playing a birding-themed board game with friends. Tame backstage? Sign me up. “It really allows you to lock in on what you’re about to do.”
It’s Paris Fashion Week, and Jenner will be kicking off her extravaganza of shows by walking in L’Oréal Paris’s Le Défilé show alongside Helen Mirren, Viola Davis, and her model pal Cara Delevingne. Next up, she’s off to close Schiaparelli. It’s a whirlwind sort of experience, even for a professional like Jenner. The model and 818 Tequila founder has been open about her personal battle with anxiety—and how equine therapy has helped her cut through the noise and dial in. Unfortunately, bringing her horse Arizona on the road isn’t really an option.
Thankfully, she has a new wellness practice that she can take with her anywhere. “I’ve realized that your words can manifest into physical form,” Jenner says. “I really believe in the power of self-talk. I have this part of my mind that’s very negative thinking. But I’m working on that all the time. The L’Oréal saying, which is ‘Because you’re worth it,’ actually plays into that a lot.”
Self-talk—whether it’s positive or negative—has been scientifically proven to affect a person’s mental state and performance. Much like Amelia Shepherd’s superhero pose seen on Grey’s Anatomy and morning mantras in the mirror, positive self-talk is all about creating a healthy inner dialogue with oneself.
“Sometimes I still feel like I’m lying to myself,” Jenner says. “But once you learn to trust and believe yourself, it can help good things transpire.”
