Nearly two decades after its release, Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) continues to spark conversations for its bold take on extramarital relationships and marital dissatisfaction. The ensemble drama, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, and Amitabh Bachchan, was both a commercial success and a lightning rod for criticism when it first hit theatres.

Rani Mukerji says India wasn’t ready for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna; calls it “ahead of its time”

In a recent chat with ANI, Rani Mukerji reflected on the polarised reception the film received at the time. She said, “Maybe India wasn’t ready for it. But it’s always nice to be part of films that are way ahead of its time. Because in history when people talk about films, at least they’ll remember our films as those films that actually spoke aloud to the nation, spoke to an audience who was yet not ready to face the truth. And through such films there were a lot of changes.”

Rani’s comment comes just months after the film completed 19 years in August. To mark the milestone, director Karan Johar took to social media to celebrate the anniversary. Sharing a carousel of behind-the-scenes photos and a throwback video featuring the cast and crew, Johar penned an emotional note about the film’s legacy. “Some love stories transcend time and still hold all the power they once did… KANK for me will always be that. My third film in and I was moved again by the absolute honour of having such terrific people on set with me to make a story that was bold… brave and full of only heart,” he wrote.

Coming back to Rani, she recently won her first National Award for her performance in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Currently, she is shooting for the third instalment of YRF’s Mardaani franchise.
