Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari are all set to release tomorrow and trade opened up about the buzz for the film and a lot more.
Trade agrees that Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’s advance is not extraordinary: “Kantara makers should have informed the audience about the setting; Sunny Sanskari should have been darker and edgier with sad songs to entice people”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Right now, the buzz is not at an all-time high for both the films. They are releasing on Gandhi Jayanti as well as Dussehra. So, it’s a big holiday. This factor will benefit both the films. Spot booking will play a big role on Thursday, along with word of mouth. The advance is not too strong for both the films, though Kantara is leading in terms of advance booking numbers.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal agreed, “The advance booking of Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 hasn’t been up to the mark. It is below expectations.” Trade analyst Atul Mohan noted, “Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is picking up gradually. Also, it’s a national holiday. That will surely prove to be an advantage.”
Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 was expected to be a huge box office opener, but that hasn’t happened yet. Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, explains, “The kind of advance we are seeing is not very encouraging or extraordinary. Kantara’s earlier part was a breakout film; the team took it as a vote of confidence that their film is going to become huge without doing much. But KGF and Pushpa were designed in a certain way. It excited the audience to buy tickets. This film has a different subject and belongs to a different genre. Hence, they needed to make this into an event. They should have spent money in informing the audience what the film is all about this time, who the characters are this time etc. This would have helped people get a reference point.”
He added, “The trailer did not have anything to get an opening. It looks like any other medieval kind of cinema. It doesn’t have a chartbuster song, cutting edge action, or masala. There’s no information on the connection with the first part. The team of the film should have come out and explained it. That is why the Hindi audience is not going all out to buy the tickets. Nevertheless, I hope that the word of mouth is extraordinary.”
Raj Bansal doesn’t agree that the trailer hasn’t worked, “The trailer has been liked. But a section of the people hasn’t been wowed by it and hence, the advance hasn’t picked up the way we were anticipating.”
Atul Mohan, meanwhile, talked about the shortcomings of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, “The marketing hasn’t created that sort of excitement. It should have been more aggressive. Earlier, there was some excitement, but after the trailer, it dropped. The marketing team should have maintained the momentum.”
Vishek Chauhan further added, “The problem with Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is that the genre is very old school. It gives a déjà vu of My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997). This idea of a man trying to break the wedding of the person he loves became a genre because of this film and it has been going on for 27 years. There’s no novelty value. Also, there’s a feeling that the trailer has given out the whole story.”
He added, “Moreover, it seems to be a pre-pandemic style of filmmaking. It seems like a light-hearted entertainer with witty one-liners. Nowadays, people want ki agar heroine chod ke chali jaaye, toh hero jaan de dega. This used to be considered cringe 10 years ago. When Sanam Teri Kasam (2016) came out, it didn’t get accepted in cinemas. The same film worked big time now. Even Saiyaara (2025) was a blockbuster as that kind of content is not readily available in the market. Animal (2023) became a rage simply for the novelty of it. Moreover, people also want songs that touch the heart. If Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari was a dark film and had an edgy tone with sad songs sung by Arijit Singh, picture chal jaati.”
At the same time, the experts are hopeful that both Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari will score at the box office. Taran Adarsh said, “People are comparing ki kaunsi aage niklegi. I believe that for the health of the industry, it is important that both movies should work. The advance booking has never been an indication. Spot booking can change the tide. Also, it’s a four-day weekend. Though Friday is a working day, if the films manage to hold strongly, then they are sorted. But it all depends on word of mouth.”
He signed off by saying, “Both are coming from reputed banners like Hombale Films and Dharma Productions. This clash is going to be worth it!”
