Arhaan Patel recently made his debut as the main lead in Mahesh Bhatt’s Tu Meri Poori Kahani, which was directed by Suhrita Das. His real-life story is also very filmi. He was doing a regular office job and later landed the role in the film. He spoke about his journey and more in an interview with us.
EXCLUSIVE: Tu Meri Poori Kahani debutant Arhaan Patel on his 1st meeting with Mahesh Bhatt, “It was a sheer flow of emotions, tears and silent exchange between me and him in that room”
You were doing a regular job. How and when did you think of becoming an actor?
It was very tough to survive in the salary of 8k in a metro city like Mumbai, which I was drawing from the job. And one of my distributors, who I was managing, put the thought in my head that I should try my luck in modelling. That’s how the journey began.
How did Mahesh Bhatt cast you as the lead in the film? How was your first meeting with him like?
At first Suhrita, the director of the film, found me. I had a meeting with her. After I left the office, I was immediately called to return to meet with Mahesh Bhatt who, in fact, was very convinced meeting with me. It was indeed a magical moment to meet with him so suddenly.
Meeting with him was honestly more of an emotional and spiritual ride for me for that 50 minutes. This was actually not a meeting, but a sheer connection and flow of emotions, tears and silent exchange between me and him in that room. My eyes were full of tears, and my heart was actually beating very fast. I didn’t have to talk or lay any of my expectations to him. It was all understood by him. My expectations and my desire was naked to him without any words which he rightfully understood. Hence it was a magical moment for me to remember all my life. Meeting with Mahesh Bhatt was only possible due to my director Suhrita Dass I shall give her all the due credit for this.
How was your first day on the film’s set?
This is a great question of my life because it autonomously becomes the most remarkable day to be on the set of a film under Mahesh Bhatt’s banner, where you are the chosen to play the lead role.
I had never been to a film set of such a large scale that also to perform as the main actor. I had all the feelings what a guy next-door would have. Like a kid, I was excited, nervous and very stressed, more nervous actually, and I couldn’t sleep the previous night. I still remember I had reached 45 minutes before the call time to make sure I’m there on time for everything they wanted out of me.
How do you look at your journey from being a commoner in Madhya Pradesh to being launched as the lead in a Bollywood film?
Firstly, I would definitely like to share one thought with every commoner. If you dream and if you want something in your life, you go for it. You have to try and try no matter how many times you fail. Try till you succeed you will definitely succeed.
However, It’s easier said than done, I have struggled and had sleepless nights for 10 years before I got this. I have faced numerous auditions and 2000 or more rejections in this city, but somewhere there was a light of Hope of again waking up the next morning and doing the same things and going for auditions again. The 10 years have been very challenging with auditions and rejections and very small time roles. There have also been times where I have been signed and paid advanced and was cancelled the next day due to being replaced.
Somewhere I knew something good will definitely happen in my life, so I continuously tried and tried and never gave up on where I actually wanted to be. This is a very tough question to answer because it’s the journey of 10 years before I got this one. Honestly, I was surviving from hand to mouth bare minimum only to feed my stomach one time a day only, so that I don’t have get sick the next day and I prepared to give a good audition.
And mainly hailing from a town of Madhya Pradesh, Sehore where I belong, people come with a different mindset, where if your dream is shared, especially your dream of becoming an actor in Mumbai city, it only becomes a laughing stock to many. So, that leaves you even more discouraging because you don’t have a single approval or validation from your close ones. This question can have a much longer answer than you expect, but I’d like to summarize in such a way that every commoner has a right to dream and chase his dreams till he succeeds. This is my honest learning, which I’d like to share with my peers.
Anu Malik has composed the music of the film. What does this mean to you?
Baap re, kya poochh liya aapne. Anu Malik, the legend of music, who is maestro of creating legendary music for every film that I remember since my childhood till date. Every music that he has created is either successful or is a super hit or becomes a sound of the era. When I got to know that he is the producer of music for the film where I am playing the lead role, it was yet another magical moment. Honestly, I didn’t even dream of. So yes, definitely more than I could even ask for.
What next after Tu Meri Poori Kahani?
I’m in a very happy space today and it has been a year of collaborating with a great team under directorship of Suhrita Das, and the entire Bhatt camp. I am enjoying every bit of this journey for the last whole year, including the very current moment.
Actually, I am in a learning curve in filmy world and I’d always like to be like this. I cannot speak for my destiny, like I said in my previous answers – keep trying and trying till you succeed. This is just the beginning of my story cheers.
