Abhishek Banerjee is one of the biggest examples of an outsider making it big in the Hindi film industry. The actor has worked his way to where he is today after going through a phase of struggle. Today, he is known not only for his comic characters like Jana from Maddock Horror Comedy Universe but also for serious and intense avatars in acclaimed projects, Paatal Lok and Stolen.
EXCLUSIVE: Abhishek Banerjee takes a friendly dig at The Ba***ds of Bollywood during his solo act ‘Tu Kaun Hai?’; narrates his life story in a hilarious way
Abhishek recently went back to stage performance after 20 years with his solo act ‘Tu Kya Hai?’. The performance took place at Mumbai’s NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts) on Sunday September 28. Through this show, the actor narrated his life story in a thoroughly humorous manner.
The biggest highlight of the evening was Abhishek’s funny mention of Aryan Khan’s directorial debut Netflix show The Ba***ds of Bollywood. While speaking about the struggles of actors, he said that a lot actors’ children become actors. But he also added, “Some star kids also become directors”, which was a hint towards Aryan Khan. He then took a pause and said, “Ba****ds”, the actual name of The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
But that’s not all as far as the references about the recent happenings were concerned. Abhishek also said, “If I mention ‘Wankhede’, please assume that I mean the stadium.” The people present understood the reference and had a good laugh. Along with this, the show was full of pop culture and current affair references.
Abhishek started the show in an unexpectedly funny manner. He entered the venue from the audience’s area with a couple of security guards trying to take him out as they couldn’t recognize him. From here on, he narrated his career journey in an engaging and funny manner. He gave special impetus to his career as a casting director too.
Although it was a solo performance, ‘Tu Kya Hai?’ saw regular appearances by the show’s writer Rajesh Nirmal, which added to the humour. Abhishek also cracked impromptu humour from the reactions of the audience and regularly engaged with them.
The performance also saw the attendance by filmmaker Amar Kaushik, who has directed Abhishek in successful films like Stree, Bhediya and Stree 2. All three films are a part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe where the actor has played the character of Jana.
