A suspected blast occurred at a house in Alur town, in Karnataka’s Hassan district, around 8.30 pm on Tuesday, claiming the life of a couple.
The victims, identified as Sudarshan Acharya (32) and his wife Kavya (28), initially sustained severe burn injuries and were rushed to the Hassan district hospital before being shifted to Bengaluru for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, Sudarshan died late Tuesday night, while Kavya succumbed in the early hours of Wednesday. Their child, who received minor injuries, is safe.
Police initially suspected a cylinder explosion but later confirmed that the blast was caused by explosive materials used in firecracker manufacturing. Investigators found that the woman’s family had links to the cracker business. Forensic experts have been called in, and a detailed report on the incident is awaited.
The force of the blast was such that the walls of the house cracked, and the doors, windows, and glass panes were damaged. Hassan Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sujitha personally supervised the rescue efforts and ensured the medical transfer of the injured.
SP Mohammad Sujitha said, “We initially suspected a cylinder blast. However, after preliminary investigation, we found that the explosion was caused by materials used for making crackers. The family is associated with the cracker manufacturing business on the woman’s side. We will be receiving a detailed written report on this today.”
