US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that his favourite word in the English dictionary is “tariff,” calling it the “most beautiful” word and crediting it for making the United States “rich.”
Speaking at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Trump said, “I love tariffs. My favourite word is tariff. We’re becoming rich as hell because of it.” He argued that other countries had been taking advantage of the US for years, but tariffs have restored fairness in trade.
Trump admitted his remark drew criticism from the media, with some asking why he didn’t choose words like “love” or “family.” “The fake news hit me hard. So I said fine, tariff is now only my fifth favourite word. But I’m okay with that,” he joked.
The comments come as his administration faces a major Supreme Court hearing in November over the legality of his sweeping global tariffs. Trump said it would be “very bad” if the case went against him, but expressed confidence in his position.
He also noted that countries like India and Brazil have been hit with high US tariffs in recent months, and warned that more “reciprocal tariffs” could follow if trade partners impose duties on American goods.
Despite the backlash, Trump insisted tariffs are paying off. “We’ve taken in trillions of dollars. No wealth like this has ever existed before,” he said.
