An elderly couple was killed in a wolf attack in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich, sparking panic and violent clashes between villagers and forest officials.
Authorities said the couple was guarding their field when a wolf pounced on them, killing both on the spot. The animal mauled the upper part of their bodies. Three others, Meena Devi, Dhanpatiya and Sebri, were injured in the attack and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
As news of the deaths spread, angry villagers brought the bodies home and blocked forest officials from entering the area. When Sub-Divisional Officer of the Forest Department, Rashid Jameel, reached the spot with his team, villagers attacked them with sticks. The officer’s vehicle was vandalised during the clash, leaving the team unable to enter the village.
Divisional Forest Officer Ram Singh Yadav confirmed the incident and said that tension was high among residents. “The anger among villagers is deep. Two days ago, one wolf was killed in the area and people thought the danger had reduced, but this fresh attack has created fear again,” Yadav said.
Residents allege that wolves have been roaming the area for weeks, creating panic. They demanded immediate safety measures, including stronger patrols and protection while working in fields.
The district administration said efforts are underway to calm the situation and restore confidence in the village. Forest officials are coordinating with police to step up security and monitor wolf movement in the region.
