Frizz is rarely the finishing accessory one is after, whether curls, coils, or straight strands are the order of the day. The best shampoos for frizzy hair go a long way toward keeping hair soft, smooth, and shiny, and industry pros recommend having at least one in rotation for days when frizz needs a gentle reminder to stay in place.

According to hairstylist and celebrity makeup artist Leticia Llesmin, a good anti-frizz shampoo can very nearly spin straw into silk, making strands “supple and light while keeping flyaways in check—the definition of camera-ready,” she says.

To find a formula that will get the job done, Llesmin recommends seeking out shampoos with moisturizing ingredients like glycerin or panthenol, or oils and butters such as olive, babassu, or argan. Shampoos with proteins will help strengthen weak spots in the strands, she says, and it’s always best to look for gentle cleansing agents instead of sulfates, since sulfates can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause more frizz.

It also protects color from fading.” As if those perks aren’t refreshing enough, the crème also contains a mint-water essence to soothe the scalp.

An industry insider’s secret for doing a sleek silk press at home, the smoothing formula also contains a blend of botanical oils that elevate softness and shine. “I love recommending this shampoo to those looking to fight frizz because—as it’s a shampoo—it’s easy to use and incorporate into your hair care routine,” says Bea Carmichael, Aveda’s global educator in styling. “There are no special skills required.” As a fragrant plus, the product is infused with Aveda’s signature Pure-fume, a spa-like blend of sandalwood, bergamot, and the aromatic grass Palma rosa.

Best for Fine to Medium Hair: Innersense Pure Harmony Hairbath

    • Why we love it: Developed for fine to medium hair types, Innersense’s Pure Harmony Hairbath harnesses a blend of natural ingredients to boost body and shine. It’s a go-to for Dusty Schlabach, curly hair specialist at Thairapy Salon in Los Angeles. “I’ll pull this out for people who need a good cleanse and have hair that is too easily weighed down,” he says. “This shampoo is effective and light. It blends quinoa and rice proteins to fortify fragile [hair] and shea butter, avocado, and rice bran oils to soften and seal the cuticle.” The result, he says, is clean, bouncy hair that resists frizz without feeling heavy, which is “exactly what finer curls need.”
    • Key ingredients: Quinoa, rice brand oil, avocado oil
    • Size: 10 fl oz
    • Sulfate-free: Yes

Best Clarifying Shampoo: Malibu C Un-Do-Goo Clarifying Shampoo

    Malibu C

    Un-Do-Goo Clarifying Shampoo

    • Why we love it: According to Schlabach, all hair can benefit from a total reset from time to time. “Product buildup and hard water can block moisture from getting in, leading to dryness, breakage, and therefore frizz,” he says. “Unlike harsh clarifiers, Un-Do-Goo uses gentler surfactants, chelating agents to remove minerals, and glycerin and Polyquaternium-10 to maintain softness.” When used occasionally, he says, the shampoo restores strands to a clean slate, so conditioners and hair treatment can more effectively penetrate and deliver their benefits. “This one needs a heads-up, though: Be careful not to overuse this and use it very sparingly on chemically treated hair,” Schlabach warns. “We say this is a gentler clarifier, but that’s relatively speaking.”
    • Key ingredients: Crystalized vitamin C, panthenol, glycerin
    • Size: 9 fl oz
    • Sulfate-free: Yes

Best for Humidity: MoroccanOil Frizz Control Shampoo

    • Why We Love It: With jackfruit extract and argan oil to smooth and amaranth oil to strengthen, MoroccanOil’s Frizz Control Shampoo delivers on its namesake promise. “Some shampoos are formulated to target frizz, while others have different objectives in mind that may not align with solving your frizzy hair needs,” says celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, naming this Moroccanoil formula an excellent solution. This is an absolute must-have of mine. It’s infused with argan oil, which is great for combating frizz. It’s also rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and essential fatty acids— the best way to nourish the hair.” Fragranced with the brand’s signature scent, an iconic mix of spicy amber and sweet florals, the shampoo also protects hair from humidity.
    • Key ingredients: Argan oil, jackfruit extract, amaranth oil
    • Size: 8.5 oz

    No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

    • Why We Love It: A cult classic for repair, Olaplex has hair oils, shampoos, and conditioners that breathe new life into dry hair and damaged tresses. The brand’s secret ingredient, present in its No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo, is Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, which mends broken bonds in the hair. The result? Healthy, smooth hair with softness and shine to spare. “This does a good job of adding moisture without weighing the hair down,” notes Hazan, via conditioning ingredients like noni fruit extract and sunflower seed oil.
    • Key ingredients: Coconut, sunflower seed oil, banana fruit extract, noni fruit extract, glycerin
    • Size: 8.5 oz

Best for Curly Hair: Pattern Hydration Shampoo

    • Why we love it: “This shampoo is amazing in all ways,” Hazan attests. “It cleanses your hair and scalp without taking away any moisture and it’s great for all hair types.” She’s also a fan of the hydrating formula. “The Pattern Hydration Shampoo has a ton of natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, and sweet almond oil, and it’s infused with [strengthening] biotin,” Hazan says. Though the shampoo works on every hair type, the brand notes that it works particularly well on 3B to 4C curls—which adds up, given that founder Tracee Ellis Ross knows a thing or two about iconic curls.
    • Key ingredients: Honey, aloe vera, coconut oil

    • Sulfate-free: Yes

Best for Styling: Virtue Smooth Shampoo

According to celebrity hairstylist and Virtue Labs creative director Adir Abergel, “It is highly concentrated with Virtue’s patented Alpha Keratin 60ku, a protein that works by filling in the damaged areas of your hair. Smooth Shampoo gives you smoother, shinier, frizz-free hair, creating a more even surface to build on with your styling products.”
    • Key ingredients: Phospholipids (to fight frizz and protect the hair from humidity), gotu kola

    • Why We Love It: With ingredients culled from the rainforest, Rahua’s Hydration Shampoo is infused with sacha inchi, an herb that locks moisture into the hair to keep frizz at bay; it’s also made with morete oil, which protects the hair from UVA rays, and Rahua oil, which strengthens hair strands and nourishes the follicle. “[This] is one of my absolute favorites,” says celebrity hairstylist Jackie Seabrooke. “It’s great for all hair types because it cleanses, hydrates, and moisturizes without being too heavy. Most importantly, it doesn’t strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, keeping your hair smooth, rich, and healthy.”
    • Key ingredients: Morete oil, rahua oil, sacha inchi
    • Size: 9.3 fl oz
    • Sulfate-free: Yes

Best Daily Shampoo: Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo

    • Why We Love It: The pros agree that a sulfate-free formulation is best for daily use. Overuse of sulfates can strip the hair of healthy oils and proteins, which leads to dryness and—you guessed it—more frizz. For a daily shampoo, seek out a gentle formula like Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Shampoo, which is formulated sans sulfates, sodium chloride, and fragrance. “This is great for enhancing the smoothness and shine of your hair to provide an overall healthier appearance,” Hazan says. “Sulfate-free and sodium chloride-free is always a must, and this includes babassu oil which is a great moisturizing agent, especially for taming frizz.”
    • Key ingredients: Babassu oil, Redken’s smoothing complex
    • Size: 10.1 fl oz
    • Sulfate-free: Yes

Best for Fine Hair: Joon Saffron Rose Shampoo

    • Why We Love It: When I want to feel like I’m smoothing out flyaways in a steamy rose garden, Joon’s color-safe shampoo is my personal pick. With a heavenly, heady scent, the formulation is infused with antioxidant-packed ingredients—including rose, pistachio, saffron, and pomegranate— that contribute to silkier, smoother, detangled hair. I have fine hair and have found that a little of this goes a long way. If your hair is similarly on the fine side, resist the urge to slather this on; instead, use a small amount for a frizz-taming cleanse that won’t weigh you down.
    • Key ingredients: Saffron, pistachio, pomegranate, and rose
    • Size: 10 fl oz
    • Sulfate-free: Yes

    Kérastase

    Elixir Ultime Le Bain Shampoo

    • Why We Love It: Infused with a blend of shine-enhancing oils—camelia, marula, and argan—Kératase’s Le Bain Shampoo brings luster back to dull hair. Hazan notes that argan and camellia oils in particular are “great for hair health and smoothing strands.” In clinical tests, the moisturizing formulation proved its smoothing abilities, keeping frizz away for 24 hours; also making the hair softer with each wash. Though some oil-heavy products weigh down fine hair, this shampoo is lightweight enough to use on all hair types. Hazan particularly likes using the shampoo on the ends of her clients’ hair to give their styles a smooth, polished look.

    • Size: 8.5 fl oz

At the heart of the formulation is a proprietary amino complex, which cleanses the hair while protecting it from breakage and damage. What’s more, jojoba esters keep the hair smooth in the face of humidity, while phytantriol both prevents color from washing out and serves as a heat protectant.

What’s the best shampoo for frizzy hair?

The 15 shampoos in this edit represent the crème de la crème for frizzy hair, according to pros who work with hair of all textures and types. Though the shampoos use different ingredients to combat frizz—whether it’s the plant polymer shied in Aveda’s formula or the argan oil in MoroccanOil’s shampoo—they all work similarly. By sealing the cuticles and restoring the hair’s moisture while they cleanse, the best shampoos for frizzy hair help it stay soft, shiny, and manageable. The trick is to find the best one for you, whether your hair is dry, fine, color-treated, or has other needs and distinguishing features.

How do I stop my hair from frizzing?

Alas, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for keeping frizz at bay. “The reasons for frizz can vary,” Schlabach explains. “The health of your hair is the first thing you need to question if frizz is a real problem.” For instance, he says, hair can get overly dried out from lightening, over-processing, chemical treatments, and heat damage. Then, of course, some people go far too long between trims. “Any of these will lead to dryness and to brittleness, which leads to breakage, which is frizz,” he says. Once the root of the frizz is determined, “The next step is to get good at styling your hair,” Schlabach continues. “It’s important to note that the healthier your hair is, the easier it is to style, because there are fewer issues to cover up and control. The better you are at that, the longer the style or definition will last.”

Llesmin adds a gentle reminder that frizz control doesn’t end in the shower. “Condition after every wash, treat with a weekly mask, and resist daily shampooing to preserve natural oils,” she advises. “Always finish with a cool rinse, dry gently with microfiber or cotton, and shield strands with leave-ins, oils, and protective sprays against heat, UV, and humidity.”

What to Look for in a Shampoo for Frizzy Hair

Below, the pros break down what to look for in a shampoo for frizzy hair.

    • Oils: “The best ingredients that help tame hair frizz are oils,” says Giannetos. “Jojoba, argan, avocado, coconut, and shea butter are some of my favorites to help tame hair frizz.”
    • Glycerin: Washington’s go-to ingredients for taming frizz include glycerin, which helps attract moisture to the hair, he says.
    • Keratin: “Keratin and amino acids can also strengthen the hair and reduce frizz,” Washington says.
    • Sulfate-free: In terms of what not to look for, Washington says: “Avoid sulfates, as they can strip moisture and worsen frizz.”
    • Telltale Buzzwords: Apart from particular ingredients, Seabrooke recommends looking for words like hydrating, moisturizing, and smoothing on the packaging.
    • Formula Type: “Knowing your hair type—whether it’s fine or thick—can help you choose between the different levels of intensity for the moisturizing ingredients. For example, if you have fine, frizzy hair, avoid deep intensive formulas, as they can weigh down your hair and make it look oily,” she adds.

“Frizzy hair can be a result of many different things, like your natural hair texture, lack of hydration in your hair, and articles of clothing—like hoodies—that cause friction with your hair,” says Giannetos. “Most people tend to encounter frizzy hair when they wake up in the morning due to the unavoidable tossing and turning that you do in your sleep.” Seabrook adds: “It’s important to recognize that frizz often results from a lack of moisture in the hair. Humidity can be your worst nightmare because when hair is dry and lacks moisture, it tries to absorb moisture from the air, causing the cuticle to swell and become frizzy. This is why hair tends to look even more frizzy in humid conditions.” Other causes Seabrook notes include washing with water that’s too hot, heat damage, rough towel drying, and genetics.

Joseph Maine, a celebrity hairstylist and the cofounder of Trademark Beauty, adds that frizz can spring up from damage due to heat styling or chemicals. “Natural hair texture, especially in curly or wavy hair, can also contribute to frizz,” he adds. “Using the right hair care products and avoiding over washing can help manage frizz effectively.”

Can shampoo actually prevent hair frizz?

“Shampoo can help prevent frizz, especially if it’s specifically formulated for that purpose,” Seabrooke says, citing formulas packed with moiturizing and smoothing ingredients as particularly useful. It’s also important to rotate out your shampoos. Frequent use of sulfates can dry out the hair, especially if you’re someone who likes to work out often and shower frequently.”

Though the best anti-frizz shampoos can help keep hair smooth, they’re best used in conjunction with other products. “Shampoo alone cannot completely prevent hair frizz, but it can help manage it when paired with a conditioner and anti-frizz treatment,” says celebrity hairstylist Davontae’ Washington.

How do you stop hair from looking frizzy?

“To stop your hair from looking frizzy, try these tips: use moisturizing and smoothing shampoos and conditioners; avoid washing your hair with very hot water; and finish with a cool rinse to close the cuticles before getting out of the shower,” says Seabrooke. Avoid rough towel drying and instead, invest in a microfiber or satin towel to absorb excess water before a blowout or hair styling, Seabrooke adds.

Always use a heat protectant before styling, and apply leave-in conditioning products like serums, oils, or creams to smooth and fight frizz. “Deep condition your hair once a week, get regular trims to keep split ends at bay, limit heat styling, and consider using a satin pillowcase,” Seabrooke adds. Giannetos seconds sleeping with a silk pillowcase. “This will limit the amount of friction that is happening while you’re sleeping since your hair will glide a lot smoother on a silk pillowcase than it would on a normal pillowcase.”
