In Corsica, a golden flower called helichrysum has been cultivated for generations. Though helichrysum—also known as immortelle—is well-known on the island for its unique properties, it is now also attracting the attention of some the most respected beauty laboratories.
“Helichrysum italicum (family Asteraceae), due to its various beneficial health effects, represents an important plant in the traditional medicine of Mediterranean countries,” a recent scientific review that examined the flower’s benefits states. “Currently, there is a renewed interest in this medicinal plant, especially in investigations involving the isolation and identification of its bioactive compounds from extracts and essential oils, as well as in experimental validation of their pharmacological activities.”
Below, everything to know about adding helichrysum to your wellness routine.
Helichrysum, the immortal golden flower
Helichrysum takes its name from the Greek words helios (sun) and chrysos (gold), and was allegedly used as an offering to the gods of Ancient Greece and Rome for luck and vitality. It has also long been used as a medicinal herbal remedy for everything from wounds to pain.
Today, in the Corsica scrubland (or “maquis”) it is well-known for its sweet, year-round, curry fragrance and tiny, vibrant flowers. Its scent can be smelled in the breeze, evoking the mystical link between the island and the flower. Shepherds and elders use the flower to protect their homes from evil spirits and to promote longevity, explaining the nickname immortelle or “immortal.” It is also known by the names everlasting, strawflower, and curry plant.

What are the benefits of helichrysum?
For Corsicans, helichrysum is a symbol of strength and timeless beauty. But the flower is not just symbolic, it also has purported wellness benefits—especially in essential oil form—thanks to various bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids.
Though research is limited, some small studies suggest that helichrysum essential oil can help promote healing, fight infection, and reduce inflammation. According to the aforementioned review, helichrysum contains “promising antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, insecticidal and anticarcinogenic properties without harmful side effects.”
