    While it’s wise to take most TikTok beauty hacks with a large pinch of salt, every once in a while, it throws up something that’s actually worth taking note of. Enter: sandwiching your skincare.

    What is the skincare sandwich method?

    With the sandwiching method, products of a lighter texture—such as toners, mists, or essences—are applied first, then a serum, and finally a thicker cream that seals all your active ingredients into the skin. Thus, the serum, which is the step most likely to contain the highest amount of active ingredients, is “sandwiched” between a thin moisture layer on the bottom and a more occlusive, heavier product, like a night cream, on top.

    The technique aims to trap the middle layer in the skin—think of it as a “moisture sandwich”—and make active ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C more effective.

    Is skincare sandwiching safe?

    “The sandwiching method can be very effective, but you need to choose the right products to ensure skin safety—not all textures are suitable for every skin type, nor are all ingredients safe for everyone—for example, retinoids should not be used during pregnancy,” explains Dr. Ev Charlott Walter, a dermatologist based in Berlin.

    “Syrian-American dermatologist and founder of ZO Skin Health, Dr. Zein Obagi, was a pioneer of this technique,” Walter adds. “He created skincare that is the perfect skincare sandwich, layering ingredients that moisturise and nourish the skin, while also protecting it.” Each stage of the skincare sandwich routine helps the next stage to develop to its full potential.

    How to create a skincare sandwich

    1. First, apply your toner, mist, or essence.
    2. Next, apply a serum—this could be a retinol to renew the skin, vitamin C to target hyperpigmentation, or niacinamide to fight impurities.
    3. Finally, apply your rich moisturizer to seal in your actives and protect your skin.

    What are the benefits of a skincare sandwich?

    Sandwiching your skincare can help boost skin hydration and enable any active ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin. However, as much as skincare sandwiching can help, it’s the size of the molecules that will determine exactly how deep a product is able to go. Consistently sandwiching your skincare can mean that any benefits are likely to come more quickly—but know that it’s not an overnight miracle worker—simply a way to potentially maximize your results over time.

    Who’s the skincare sandwich best suited to?

    Everyone can benefit from it, but there are a few minor caveats. “Those with sensitive skin may run the risk of applying products that are too strong or oily, which can cause perioral dermatitis or acneiform dermatitis,” Walter explains.

    “I am cautious with patients who suffer from atopic dermatitis and with patients who have suffered from perioral dermatitis before,” she adds. “Skincare should also always be adapted to seasonal changes—consider applying richer creams during the winter and gentler moisturising lotions in summer, for example.”
