A Reddit user’s nostalgic post recalling the “old Bangalore” has sparked a flood of civic grievances online, with residents complaining about dust-filled roads, endless construction, and deteriorating infrastructure in the city now known as Bengaluru.
In the post titled, “Oh I miss my Bangalore,” the Reddit user said that the city had “lost its charm” after years of unplanned growth, constant construction, and poor civic maintenance.
“Things were good when our city was Bangalore itself! It has become Bengaluru, and it has lost its charm,” the user said, adding that even well-known localities like Jayanagar and Basavanagudi are not spared from dug-up roads, layers of dust, and prolonged water supply work.
Shops, the user said, had resorted to covering their fronts with transparent sheets to keep out dusty winds.
The user also argued that poor governance and corruption are at the root of Bengaluru’s civic issues, saying that while residents often blame lack of hygiene and civic sense, it is politicians and government authorities who are “encouraging” the problem by failing to provide basic infrastructure.
“Despite being one of the highest tax-paying (directly and indirectly) and a municipal authority not devoid of any resources, we don’t have basic infrastructure and maintenance, critical for a high standard of living,” the post read.

Other users weighed in with their own experiences and comparisons. One user, who had just returned from Hyderabad, argued that Bengaluru has “a lot to learn” from its neighbouring city, adding how poorly garbage bins are maintained and how dust remains long after civic works are completed.
Another user wrote: “The old charm of Bangalore is lost. Hyderabad has better infrastructure than Bangalore now.”
Some also spoke of a personal sense of guilt, with one user saying: “It is because of migrants like me. Every day I feel guilty of existing here and paying the highest taxes on necessities.”
