Red Bull Skateboarder Breaks World Record With Help From Prada Linea Rossa

Less than 24 hours after breaking the world record for the biggest skateboard drop-in at 70 meters, Sandro Dias was feeling normal Friday.

“I’m surprised. Nothing is in pain on my body. Actually, it’s kind of crazy. Every test that I did before was super hard and super intensive, but the days after I felt normal. It’s kind of weird for my age,” he said.

The 50-year-old Red Bull-sponsored athlete said that “thinking too much about everything” — specifically reaching more than 64 miles per hour on the runway and the height of the feat — was the scariest part of the endeavor. Skating from a height of 70 meters with a drop of 60 meters, the Brazilian descended on the Centro Administrativo Fernando Ferrari — a nearly 89-meter building in his homeland’s city of Porto Alegre. Although it took some time for the safety team to rappel him onto the 22-floor landmark, Dias only needed eight seconds for the record-breaking drop.

Asked the most obvious question, “Did you think about dying?” Dias laughed, “That’s a funny question. I tried not to think about that, because I was preparing so much to make this happen. For sure, I have put my life at risk. But I never want to think in that way. If you do, it will block my mind and maybe I will give up. I try not to think about this,” he said.

During the “Red Bull Building Drop,” Dias said he felt strong mentally and focused on positive things. “If I started to think like a normal person, who was not involved in the project, that would be the scary part.”

Sandro Dias is headlining the “Red Bull Building Drop” in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

As a skateboarder, Dias said he is always trying to envision places to skate whenever he drives anywhere. Having first passed by the CAFF Building en route to a competition in the late 1980s, he immediately saw it as a quarter-pipe. Thirteen years ago, he drafted the project for Red Bull, but the complexity and expense of executing it made it out of reach. Three years ago, he had another crack at it, due to new leadership. “It was a dream that came true. This building is like folklore for all the skaters in Brazil, who always imagine that one day somebody could skate on this. I did yesterday, and finally the dream of so many people came true. That will stay with me so that was nice,” Dias said.

Although he started training at the gym two years ago, he enhanced that earlier this year with dizzying flights to get better acclimated to the G-force. Dias also spent time being towed by a car to get comfortable with speed and then crashing into air bags to stop. Thursday’s record-breaker made Dias feel like he weighed 639 pounds, due to the G-force.

After breaking the record, Dias hung out with the crowd for three or four hours before having dinner with his wife and friends including ones from Red Bull. Then it was off to a local skate park. “They were having a party. I don’t think it was a party for the event, but I was feeling it,” he said with a laugh.

“Luckily,” Prada Linea Rossa chose Dias’ event as one of the athletic ones it would support through its partnership Red Bull, he said. “I’m very happy this happened. It’s very hard in the beginning to understand, ‘Why would Prada want with a skateboarder?’ But thank you Prada. You supported us a lot. I am so proud to have worn Prada. It’s a nice brand and it’s not just for skateboarders.”

A school test kept Dias’ eight-year-old daughter in the classroom Thursday, but the youngster’s teacher turned on the event live, as did his 12-year-old son’s teacher. “I was really surprised to hear that. They were super excited,” he said.

Just as the Red Bull Building Drop was a secret for 13 years, Dias isn’t disclosing what’s next. It’s safe to say he will have the support of the esteemed skater Tony Hawk, who predicted Dias would break the record. “We know each other well. He knows my style and how I skate. It was very nice to hear him talk about me and that put a lot of confidence in me. That was good — helped me a lot.”
