Actor Bobby Deol recently opened up about a difficult chapter in his career — being removed from what became the iconic Bollywood film Jab We Met. He revealed he had championed the project before its release, only to be replaced, a turn of events that deeply upset him at the time.

How it all began
Bobby said he first heard Imtiaz Ali’s work when he saw a rough cut of Socha Na Tha, and that he was immediately impressed. He contacted Imtiaz and expressed his desire to work with him. At that point, the film that later became Jab We Met had the working title Geet. Bobby claimed that he was involved in early efforts to get the film made — talking to producers, proposing actresses for the role of Geet, and suggesting financing.
What changed
According to Bobby, over time, things shifted. Although he initially believed the role would be his, the filmmaker eventually cast Shahid Kapoor in the part he expected to play. He said he had no work during that period and was very excited about the project, which made being excluded even more painful. Bobby commented that while he was “heartbroken,” he bore no animosity toward Imtiaz Ali, whom he described as talented and a good friend. He acknowledged that when Imtiaz was starting out, he also had pressures and had to make choices under constraints.
Imtiaz Ali’s side of the story
Imtiaz Ali, in his interviews, confirmed that he had planned Jab We Met with Bobby Deol. He said Socha Na Tha had taken him five years to make and release, and that after finishing that, he waited for Bobby to commit to Jab We Met. However, Imtiaz also revealed that Bobby had other film offers, and delays occurred. Eventually, Imtiaz said he felt it was unfair to keep postponing, especially since it was affecting his own ability to move forward. So the decision was made to recast.
Looking back now
Today, Bobby expressed no bitterness. He has said that in hindsight, he understood the difficulties Imtiaz faced as a young director without many choices. He often mentioned he would only watch Imtiaz’s future films if they cast him. Despite the disappointment, Bobby maintained respect for Imtiaz’s work and success.
