Who is Anya Singh?
Anya Singh is a popular actress, who was born in London and before moving to Delhi at the age of 5, she spent a part of her childhood in the UK. She did her schooling at Mayo College Girls’ School in Ajmer. She comes from a non-filmy background, as her father is a doctor and her grandfather served in the armed forces. Despite such a background, Anya’s interest in films was clear from a young age.
Anya Singh’s early Bollywood career
Anya Singh’s Bollywood journey so far is no less than a roller coaster ride. Anya’s passion towards arts began with classical dance training at a young age. Reportedly, she is a trained Odissi dancer. Slowly and gradually, her dancing skills motivated her to try acting. According to a report by India Today, Anya’s family had mixed support towards her decision to act. She had shared that her mother used to ask her to come back after every project.
She made her debut in 2017, with the Yash Raj Films, Qaidi Bandi, alongside Aadar Jain. In the film, she played the role of ‘Bindiya Chadha’, who was a spirited character in a musical drama about undertrials forming a band in prison. Even though, the film failed to impress the audience, Anya’s performance captured attention.
Recent successes of Anya Singh in Bollywood
Over the years, she expanded her horizons, by working in regional cinema and OTT shows. In 2019, she made her debut in the Telugu film industry with Ninu Veedani Needanu Nene. Over the years, she appeared in Never Kiss Your Best Friend, Kaun Banegi Shikharwati, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan and Jee Karda, in which she received a lot of love for her on-screen presence.
In 2024, Anya Singh solidified her position in the film industry with her role as ‘Chitti’ in the blockbuster film, Stree 2, alongside Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. However, it was Aryan Khan’s directorial debut show, The Ba***ds of Bollywood, which can be called a major turning point of her life. In the series, she played the role of ‘Sanya’, who is a no-nonsense manager of ‘Aasmaan Singh’ (played by Lakshay Lalwani). This series brought her to the top of IMDb’s list of popular Indian celebrities.
Anya Singh once faced derogatory comments on social media for wearing a bikini
In an old interview that happened after Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, Anya Singh had revealed that she doesn’t indulge a lot in social media, but she recalled a time when she had been trolled for wearing a bikini during the photoshoot of her first film. She had shared:
“As I don’t indulge in it much, it has never become an issue for me. But I remember when I did a photoshoot for my first film, wearing a bikini, I received many derogatory comments. But before I could react, my cousins and friends hounded these people. So, my energy was to let them know it’s fine, and they should stop.”
She had also spoken about facing comments on her body only because she was skinny. She had revealed that in the early stages of her career, she was given aids to wear with her clothes, so that it fits well. But, later she realised that it was important to be happy with yourself and be secure, because such things are a part of the industry. She was quoted as saying:
“When I started, there were things given to me to aid the clothes, to make them look voluptuous or just flow better. I understood it’s part and parcel of the industry. And if you are happy with yourself, it won’t really matter. You need to take it with a pinch of salt and become thick-skinned. Also, one will always find fault in things you do, it just bores me to listen.”
