The third episode of the One Chicago podcast certainly didn’t disappoint. Sharon Goodwin is a fan favourite character and after this episode it’s clear to see why the character is so loved. S. Epatha Merkerson gives a unique look into her own journey as an actor, past and present characters.
Her extensive partnership with Dick Wolf shows just how incredible she is as an actor, to have over 600 episodes in multiple big-name shows is no small feat. All the Dick Wolf shows are notorious for featuring the best of the best in the acting world, and that is clearly why S. Epatha Merkerson fits right in. The discussion of how S. Epatha gained the job for Chicago Med is arguably one of the funniest ways I’ve known someone to get a job, but seems right on brand.
It has always been clear that Sharon Goodwin is a powerful woman and a great representation for women across the globe, but it’s even nicer to see that S. Epatha is such a great example for women wanting to succeed and that bleeds into the characters she plays. Many people grew up watching Van Buren do her thing on Law and Order and it’s great to see that S. Epatha shares the same beliefs that Van Buren and Goodwin are as similar as fans believe them to be.
Her impression of Jason Beghe was hilarious, it was awesome to hear how the pair speak to the writers regarding their characters. The attention and due care to understand their characters fully is certainly a reason why these characters are as loved and as well developed as they are. The learning experience with Andrew Dennis that S. Epatha did within her first year on Med was extraordinary to hear, she learned the true experience of hospital working and surgery clearly aiding her in her portrayal of Goodwin.
Brian Luce’s story about the young man who was caught dealing drugs showed the humanity in the world of policing, I imagine that more stories will be shared by Brian throughout the podcasts and, will give a deeper insight to the world of policing and transporting that into the One Chicago world, which I am definitely looking forward to.
We get a little sneak peek that a possible surgery in the upcoming season set S. Epatha back, it is something that will surprise the audience which is highly compelling. Hearing how Crystal manages to make the surgery and injuries look realistic is truly awe inspiring, all the details it takes to orchestrate realistic surgical acts including the leg amputation in the recent One Chicago crossover was fascinating.
This episode contained a wealth of knowledge between S. Epatha and Brian, I can’t wait to see the BTS secrets revealed in next week’s episode.
