India has assured itself of at least three medals at the Para Archery World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, with an all-India final set up in the men’s compound open category and teenage sensation Sheetal Devi storming into the women’s compound final on Thursday, September 25.
In a landmark achievement, Rakesh Kumar, the Paralympic bronze medallist from Paris, and relative international newcomer Toman Kumar have reached the gold-medal match of the men’s compound open individual section. Their contrasting semifinal victories have set up an all-India final, marking a historic moment for Indian para archery as one of the two athletes will bring home a first-ever gold medal in the event.
The finals have been scheduled for Saturday, September 27.
Rakesh, seeded seventh, stunned third seed Nathan Macqueen of Great Britain 147-143, while Toman edged past compatriot Shyam Sunder Swami 144-143 in a close all-Indian semi-final.

Teenage archer Sheetal Devi stormed into the women’s compound final, continuing her meteoric rise in the sport. At just 18 years old, Devi has already made a significant mark in para, becoming one of India’s youngest Paralympiic medallists with a bronze in the mixed team compound event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
She secured a commanding 145-140 win over Great Britain’s Jodie Grinham in the semi-final.
Sheetal will face Turkiye’s Oznur Cure Girdi, the World No. 1 archer in the category. Notably, Girdi had beaten Sheetal in the 2023 World Championships final in Pizen by the narrowest of margins – 2 points.
Born with phocomelia, a rare congenital condition leading to underdeveloped limbs, Devi has overcome physical challenges to excel in archery. Her determination and skill have inspired many, and her journey serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes with disabilities. Her ability to consistently perform at the highest level has earned her recognition and admiration both in India and internationally.
