Actor-filmmaker Anupam Kher believes in the power of second chances — a philosophy that’s driving the re-release of his film Tanvi the Great in theatres on September 26. The film, which originally hit cinemas in July, marked Kher’s return to directing after over two decades, following his 2002 film Om Jai Jagdish.

Tanvi The Great tells the story of a young autistic woman, played by debutant Shubhangi Dutt, who is determined to fulfill her late father’s dream of hoisting the Indian tricolor at the world’s highest battlefield — Siachen.

“I think second chances are very important in life,” said Kher in an interview with PTI. “The first attempt may disappoint, but we must always keep hope alive.” The film will be re-released in 17 to 20 cities, with a strategy to run one show at a time for a week, depending on audience response. “It’s a risk only for one week. The reward could last ten,” Kher noted.

Reflecting on the film’s initial box office performance, Kher admitted it was an emotional experience. “I was upset, sad, and even cried. When you work hard and don’t see the expected results, it hurts. But the key is to never give up.” Tanvi The Great initially clashed at the box office with Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara, a surprise hit that went on to earn over Rs. 560 crores. “Even Adi Chopra or Mohit Suri probably didn’t expect it to do so well,” Kher said. “We were tracking ahead of Saiyaara at first. But it’s okay. I’m happy for them.” Kher expressed admiration for newcomers Ahaan and Aneet, stars of Saiyaara, and highlighted his ongoing support for emerging talent. “I run an acting school. I understand the heartbeat of newcomers. My father used to say, ‘The one who comes second or third still has a chance to come first.’”

According to Kher, the decision to bring Tanvi the Great back to cinemas was reinforced by the positive global response it received, including praise from his friend and Silver Linings Playbook co-star Robert De Niro, who attended the film’s New York premiere. “I don’t lose hope,” Kher said. “I’ve spent 40 years not only celebrating success but learning from failure. I often say, I am a success story of my failures.” He added that in earlier times, discussions around films were based on quality. “Now, success is measured only by box office performance. But we made a good film, and people reacted positively. That’s why I felt it deserved another chance, even if on a limited scale.”

The veteran actor Anupam Kher, who has worked in over 400 films across languages and platforms, said the film was also screened for students at his alma mater, D.A.V. School. “I think it’s very important to give Shubhangi another opportunity. Today’s generation feels things instantly, especially with social media. It constantly reminds you if something didn’t work. This re-release gives everyone involved another shot at reaching audiences.”

Shubhangi Dutt said she was grateful for the second opportunity and called her debut a blessing. “Working with Anupam sir and seeing how he approaches life — it’s been a huge learning experience. He’s shown me that no matter how many setbacks you face, you must keep going.” She also shared her reaction to Robert De Niro’s praise of her performance, which he called “terrific”. “I became emotional when I heard that. I never imagined I’d experience something like this in my very first film. The journey has been beautiful.” Kher mentioned that Tanvi the Great is being distributed globally by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, and discussions for its digital release are ongoing. “I’m a stubborn person,” Kher concluded. “Even if it means spending more money, I want to give this film a proper closure. I believe our journey can inspire others — and that’s worth it.”
