US President Donald Trump described a series of “sinister” mishaps at the United Nations as deliberate acts of sabotage, saying the Secret Service will be involved in investigating the incidents.
“A REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations yesterday — Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” Trump said in a statement posted on Truth Social, recounting what he described as a day of near accidents and technical failures during his visit.
Trump highlighted the first incident: the escalator leading to the Main Speaking Floor came to a sudden stop. “It’s amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first. It was only that we were each holding the handrail tightly or it would have been a disaster,” he said, pointing to what he called “absolute sabotage.” Trump cited a London Times report noting that UN workers had joked about turning off an escalator in the past.
The president also recounted a teleprompter failure as he addressed a global television audience. “First the escalator event, and now a bad teleprompter. What kind of a place is this?” Trump said. He noted that the teleprompter kicked in about 15 minutes later, but the speech received “fantastic reviews” for his improvisation.
Finally, Trump said the sound system in the auditorium was malfunctioning, making it impossible for world leaders to hear his remarks without interpreter earpieces. “The first person I saw at the conclusion of the speech was Melania She said, ‘I couldn’t hear a word you said.’ This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN,” he added.
Trump said he will send a copy of this letter to the UN Secretary-General demanding an immediate investigation and that all security tapes, particularly those related to the escalator emergency stop, be preserved. “The Secret Service is involved. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he concluded.
On Tuesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the incident “unacceptable” and suggested it may not have been an innocent glitch. “If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt wrote on X.
