Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about his close relationship with veteran actor and writer Piyush Mishra, describing it as one built on honesty, mutual respect, and compassion—even when criticisms are involved.
“Why do you do these things?”: Anurag Kashyap reflects on his honest and supportive bond with Piyush Mishra and Manoj Bajpayee
Anurag and Piyush, who have collaborated on several projects over the years, share a unique dynamic. Their friendship is marked by candid conversations and the freedom to express opinions without filters. This was evident in a recent interaction where Piyush, seated right next to Anurag, openly shared that he did not enjoy the second halves of several of the Anurag’s films—even the ones they worked on together.
In an interview with News18, Anurag acknowledged the nature of their bond, stating, “He loves me. He also gets upset when I react. He tells me, ‘Why do you do that? Just stop.’ He says he wasted too much of his life reacting to things and advises me not to follow the same path.” The director also spoke about his similar relationship with actor Manoj Bajpayee, another frequent collaborator and long-time friend. “When I do or say something, Manoj tells me, ‘Yaar, tum kyun karte ho aise?’ (Why do you do such things?),” Anurag said. “He’s very practical and experienced. But at the same time, I know he always has my back. He’s like an elder brother to me—even though he looks ten times younger. He has always looked out for me and gives me the most honest advice.”
In a joint conversation on the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel, Piyush Mishra spoke candidly about his views on some of Anurag’s most acclaimed works. He admitted to watching Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) occasionally but revealed that he tends to avoid Gulaal (2009). “I’m sorry, Anurag, I know I’m in the film, but I didn’t understand the second half of Gulaal. I have no idea what you were trying to do,” Piyush said. “That’s his issue—he often makes an excellent first half, and then something happens. It’s like he doesn’t believe he made a good film and feels the need to complicate it.” He continued, “Gulaal was a good film, and then it lost its way. The same happened with Dev D. The first half was brilliant, then it took a turn I didn’t expect. I thought Dev D would be a film about alcoholism, but it became something else entirely. Even with Gangs of Wasseypur, part one was great, then he went off track.”
Despite the criticism, the tone between the two remained friendly, highlighting the deep trust and mutual admiration in their relationship. Anurag, for his part, appeared to take the remarks in stride, reinforcing how his friendships are rooted in honesty and the freedom to express without fear of judgment.
