Donald Trump has claimed that taking Tylenol, or Paracetamol, during pregnancy can cause Autism, and suggested a drug called Leucovorin as a cure. However, scientific evidence does not support this assertion. According to a major new Swedish study of 2.5 million children which compared siblings and found no increased risk of Autism or ADHD from Paracetamol exposure during pregnancy. This suggests that any small connection seen in older studies was likely due to other factors like genetics. While the FDA has approved Leucovorin, it is for a rare condition called Cerebral Folate Deficiency, which has some overlapping symptoms with Autism but is not the same condition. The key takeaway from the report is that “there’s no solid scientific proof that Paracetamol causes Autism,” and that pregnant women should consult their doctors rather than making medical decisions based on headlines or political statements.
