On the latest episode of KBC 17, Big B had a lighthearted exchange with contestant, Asha Dhiryan, whom he addressed as an ‘adbhut mahila’. During a fun segment, Asha was asked to praise herself in 60 seconds. After she completed complimenting herself, she requested the Bollywood superstar to say something nice about his wife, Jaya. Giving a warm smile, Amitabh replied that they had been married for more than five decades, and if Jaya had managed to tolerate him for all those years, then that itself was the highest form of praise. In his words:
“Deviji humare byaah ko 52 years hogaye hain, baavan saal tak unhone humko jhela iss zyaada tareef kya hosakti hai.”

Asha spoke about her love story and how her husband fell in love with her at first sight on the show. Recalling the moment, she shared that once she complained to a short friend about her tall husband, as he used to follow her often to propose marriage. Hearing her story, Big B reacted, saying that he very much liked what she said, but there was one thing with which he could connect well. Hinting at his wife, Jaya’s short height, Amitabh said:
“Saari baatein humko aapki bahot acchi lagi, pyaari lagi par ek baat joh aapne boli na ke meri friend itti si thi aur upar dekh kar mere husband ko dhamka rahi thi, woh humare liye koi nayi baat nahi hai.”

In a 2008 interview with People magazine, Jaya Bachchan opened up about how she managed to keep her marriage to Amitabh Bachchan intact and strong despite the attention and rumours surrounding him. For the uninitiated, Amitabh and Rekha’s alleged relationship has been a highly publicised matter. Jaya said the secret key was not to be overpossessive. She explained that she trusted her husband and his family’s values. Instead of trying to control him, she chose to give him space and support him in thick and thin. In her words:
“By just leaving him alone. You have to have the conviction. I married a good man and a family that believes in commitment. You must not get too possessive, especially in our profession, where you know things aren’t going to be easy. You can either drive the artist crazy or you can help him or her grow. And if he goes, then he was never yours!”
