Actor Rhea Chakraborty has opened up about an unusual yet poignant moment she experienced in the aftermath of being granted bail in the high-profile Sushant Singh Rajput case. During a recent appearance, she recalled performing a “naagin dance” inside jail for her fellow inmates on the day she got bail, a spontaneous act born from empathy rather than levity.

Chakraborty, who was held in custody for 28 days before the Bombay High Court granted her bail, described how she initially hesitated but eventually embraced the moment. “People asked me to dance for them. I did naagin dance on the day of my bail. I thought that we never know when I’ll meet them next and if I can give them a moment of happiness, then why not? Most of those women are innocent and hopeless in such under-trial prisons.”
Even after receiving a clean chit from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chakraborty revealed the complex emotional aftermath. “People said he (Sushant) did not go because of you. I always knew I hadn’t done anything. But even when the clean chit came, I couldn’t feel happy. I was only happy for my parents and their reputation. But we were no longer the same carefree family, it can’t come back. That moment altered all of us completely, for our entire life.” She admitted that though the formal legal vindication had come, the irretrievable changes to her life and family meant she couldn’t return to her old self.
Chakraborty also addressed the intense grief she endured, noting that while many focused on those who died, “the person who was the closest to him suffered the biggest loss”. She shared that she was not given a “normal chance to grieve at that time” but that with time she believes her grieving process has concluded and she is now “fine”.
Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead at his Mumbai home on June 14, 2020. His girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty faced intense media scrutiny and legal battles, including accusations of abetment of suicide and drug-related charges. Though arrested along with her brother Showik by the NCB, both were granted bail. After years of investigation, the CBI’s closure report has cleared Rhea of all charges, bringing her much-needed relief.
