Web Series Review: THE TRIAL SEASON 2 scores due to the subplots and Kajol’s excellence

    Director: Umesh Bist

    Synopsis:
THE TRIAL SEASON 2 is a story of a married couple and their trials and tribulations. After the events of the first season, Noyonika Sengupta (Kajol Devgan) continues her work at Khanna & Chaubey law firm, run by Malini Khanna (Sheeba Chaddha) and her ex-flame Vishal Chaubey (Alyy Khan). Noyonika has still not forgotten her hubby Rajiv Sengupta (Jisshu Sengupta) for sleeping with an escort and she’s also upset about his entry into politics. As expected, it continues to take a toll on their daughters, Anaira (Suhani Juneja) and Ananya (Myra Singh). Elections are around the corner and this time, Rajiv’s biggest and fiercest rival is Law Minister of Maharashtra, Narayani Dhole (Sonali Kulkarni). Meanwhile, a new partner joins Khanna & Chaubey, Param Munjal (Karanvir Sharma). His presence adds to the stress of Malini, who feels sidelined. On the other hand, Param’s detective aide Sunil Rathore aka Sunny (Kunal Thakur) makes life tough for Sana (Kubbra Sait). What happens next forms the rest of the series.

The Trial Season 2 Story Review:
THE TRIAL SEASON 2 is based on the American show, THE GOOD WIFE. Amit Raj and Khushboo Raj’s story is relatable. Amit Raj and Khushboo Raj’s screenplay is captivating though the writing could have been more convincing. Niranjan Iyengar, Amit Raj and Khushboo Raj’s dialogues are normal and sharp as required.

Umesh Bist’s direction is smooth. Unlike last time, this time, there are just 6 episodes and the decision pays dividends. Often, web shows feel lengthy and tedious when they consist of 8 or 10 episodes. THE TRIAL SEASON 2’s run time is just right and so are the cases this time. The one that stands out the most is the track of Shanaya Q (Santana Roach). It seems inspired by a real-life personality and that adds to the relatability. In fact, the makers have touched upon other relevant topics as well, like sons of the soil vs outsiders, political parties crossing all lengths while demeaning a rival leader, etc. However, what stands out is the love triangle of Noyonika, Rajiv and Vishal and the drama it creates.

On the flipside, the political battle looks superficial. The makers fail to give the audience the feeling that the election of one of the biggest states of India is around the corner. One doesn’t come across any major leader from both parties except Rajiv, Narayani and to some extent, Ilyaas (Aseem Hattangadi). The conclusion of a few court cases and the ‘deals’ made by Dheeraj Paswan (Gaurav Pandey) seem superficial in some places. Lastly, a blunder is committed by the makers as Dheeraj mentions Pernia Khattar as Pernia Qureshi in an important scene in the second episode.

    The Trial Season 2 Performances:
Kajol Devgan, as expected, excels. The beauty of the performance is that there’s not a single false note in her act. Jisshu Sengupta’s character gets to do a lot more this time and delivers a stupendous performance. Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha are fine and add to the madness. Kubbra Sait is a delight, as expected, while Kenneth Desai (Ketan Patel) is a welcome addition; some of his scenes are too funny. Sonali Kulkarni delivers a fiery performance and has a crucial role. Aseem Hattangadi and Gaurav Pandey impress with their acting and voices. Santanu Ghatak (Shumon; Noyonika’s brother) leaves a huge mark. Santana Roach is an actor to watch out for; watch out for how she expresses through her eyes. Aiman Sheikh (Twinkle) is another talent who steals the show. Ramakant Dayama (Judge Thakore) and Asrani (Navroz Electricwala) are the surprises of the show and are quite entertaining. Abhiraj Chawla (Yash) and Pradnya Motghare (Priya) stand out because of their track; the way new information stumbles out every few minutes is nicely executed. Adithi Kalkunte (Prajakta Joshi; cancer affected) gives a fine performance, but her dialogue delivery could have been much more realistic. Suhani Juneja, Myra Singh, Karanvir Sharma, Kunal Thakur, Pamela Bhutoria (Chitrangda; Vishal’s girlfriend), Isha Sandhir (Raabiya; Shanaya’s sister) and Ria Nalwade (Pernia Khattar; influencer) are decent.

The Trial Season 2 music and other technical aspects:
Siddharth and Sangeet Haldipur’s music in the opening credits is catchy, while the background score is classy. Kuldeep Mamania’s cinematography is satisfactory. Sandeep Mohan Meher’s production design is rich. Abhilasha Sharma and Devraj Das’ costumes are glamorous and the ones worn by Kajol are dreamy. Khushboo Raj’s editing is slick.

The Trial Season 2 Review Conclusion:
On the whole, THE TRIAL SEASON 2 scores due to the riveting subplots, well-executed drama and stupendous performances.

    Rating – 3 stars
