US President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled two new investor visa schemes — the Trump Gold Card and the Trump Platinum Card — promising revenue for the US government and a legal route to residency for wealthy applicants.
“The card will be available for $1 million for individuals, and $2 million for corporations,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. He argued the programme would help fix a system he said had been broken for decades.
“For far too long, we have had millions of illegal aliens pouring into our country, and our immigration system was broken. It is beyond time that the American people, and American taxpayers, are benefitting from our legal immigration system,” Trump said.
The Gold Card includes a potential pathway to citizenship after vetting, while the Platinum version — priced at $5 million — allows foreigners to spend up to 270 days in the US without paying taxes on overseas income.
Trump predicted the programmes could be a windfall. “We anticipate THE TRUMP GOLD CARD will generate well over $100 billion dollars very quickly,” he said, adding the money would go toward “reducing taxes, pro-growth projects, and paying down our debt.”
The Platinum Card is a rebranded version of a $5 million “gold card” Trump had first floate in February to replace the EB-5 investor visa programme.
Critics are likely to view the initiative as pay-to-play immigration. Trump, however, cast it as a patriotic fix. “Buy THE TRUMP GOLD CARD now,” he wrote, linking to a government site.
