‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Stars Sean Kaufman, Rain Spencer Talk “Staylor” Love Story and Filming ‘The Bear’-Like Kitchen Scene

[This story contains major spoilers from Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty series finale.]

For three seasons, viewers have watched the ups and downs of Isabel “Belly” Conklin’s love triangle with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher on Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty. But there was also another love story with Belly’s brother Steven and her best friend Taylor, dubbed “Staylor” to fans.

Often at times adding levity to the constant drama between Belly and the Fisher brothers, Sean Kaufman’s Steven and Rain Spencer’s Taylor shared their fair share of trials and tribulations from denying feelings to fears of vulnerability and trust, to reuniting and committing to being a couple by series end. They are even set to move to California together as Steven continues to pursue his new career venture with business partner Denise (Isabella Briggs).

But having to tell a love story separate from the main Belly-Conrad-Jeremiah saga didn’t faze Kaufman and Spencer. “As much as the story is The Summer I Turned Pretty — “I” being Belly — I do think their love exists in a separate format from all that. It’s not there to compete or contradict. I think it exists together,” Kaufman tells The Hollywood Reporter.

“They have great onscreen chemistry. Every time I see them onscreen, my eyes are glued,” Casalegno adds of watching the pair’s characters interact.

The season three finale debuted on Prime Video Wednesday, but hours after the premiere, the Amazon-owned streamer announced it greenlit a feature-length installment that will serve as the actual series ender, and that Han will co-write the film’s script alongside Sarah Kucserka. Han will also direct the movie, which will wrap up Belly’s story.

Will viewers see Steven and Taylor’s life in California? They admit they’re just as in the dark as fans are (but really). Below, Kaufman, Spencer and Casalegno speak to THR about the upcoming film, online rumors about their characters’ fate for the final season and talk that argument scene in the kitchen (and, yes, they wanted it to be like The Bear.)

So this season was not the actual ending and there will be a movie. What can you all tease? Will all of your characters be involved?

GAVIN CASALEGNO Honestly, we have no clue! We’ve heard whispers about it, but we’re really just in the dark as much as you are. I guess keep reading fan theories.

SEAN KAUFMAN I swear, we’re not even lying to you. We were lying to you a couple months ago, 1758246021 we actually don’t know anything!

RAIN SPENCER There’s not a script yet.

What do you think will happen with your characters in the movie? Could we see Steven and Taylor’s life in California? Jeremiah continuing his culinary career, and possibly a relationship with Denise?

CASALEGNO [Sean and Rain] have great onscreen chemistry. Every time I see them onscreen, my eyes are glued. So I’d love to see them in San Francisco booing around. That would be super fun.

KAUFMAN He keeps saying “onscreen” by the way. It’s because Rain and I hate each other!

CASALEGNO I’m surprised they’re sitting next to each other right now.

SPENCER I would like to see “Staylor” actually be in a relationship because they keep trying to get there. But what does it look like when they full send it?

This show was so centered on the love story Belly shared with both Jeremiah and Conrad, yet we also have the love story of Steven and Taylor and watched their relationship go through its ups and downs and even, at one point, almost have their own love triangle. I was curious how you both approached your characters’ love story without it being overshadowed by Belly’s love stories?

SPENCER I think everything that is not Belly in the story is there for her and for the brothers.

KAUFMAN I don’t really think it’s about navigating it through the lens of other people. Steven and Taylor just happened to be best friends with these people. At the end of the day, their love is very true to them. I think as much as the story is The Summer I Turned Pretty — “I” being Belly, I do think that their love exists in a separate format from all that. I don’t think it’s there to compete or contradict. I just think it exists together.

CASALEGNO Their love is so different. Their relationship and love is so different from anything else that we’ve seen onscreen that it was really fun to watch. It was a fun journey to be a part of. I loved watching all of their scenes together. They had great chemistry and seeing them work together was super fun.

Well the scene where Steven and Taylor are arguing while Jeremiah is cooking was hands down my favorite scene this season.

KAUFMAN That was a great scene!

SPENCER I had so much fun!

CASALEGNO Yeah it was a blast.

KAUFMAN I remember that scene being a pain because they had to get the smoke from the oven and then the alarm had to go over a certain time. I think by the end, Gavin was actually stressed out.

CASALEGNO Literally. I was like, there’s nothing going right, they’re always yelling, I’m having to yell at them. It was hard! Cooking, even fake cooking, is really hard… while also acting, timing out things and also remembering to grab the mitt before you do this and before you do this, move the cup like this, you got to flip it like this. It was crazy. It was like solving a Rubik’s cube while taking a freakin’ math test at the same time.

It was like watching an episode of The Bear.

CASALEGNO Yeah! That’s genuinely what we wanted it to be made to feel like, so I’m glad that came across.

In the beginning, it seemed like Steven was more for Conrad and Belly being together. Taylor was the captain of team jellyfish but then as the seasons continued, we see Steven being closer with Jeremiah and Taylor being more open to Conrad and Belly. Where do you think your characters truly lied with who Belly should’ve been with?

KAUFMAN I think Stephen could care less about which brother [she’s with]. He just wants her to be happy. I think that was one of the things about her going to Paris; he has to respect the decision and hope that his younger sister can learn and grow and be happy. I think he’s always rooting for her, no matter what brother does what or goes to Cabo or goes to California.

Given everyone was left guessing what would happen this season, there were so many rumors — including people thinking Steven was going to die, that Jeremiah was going to end up with Redbird and that Taylor was pregnant. Did you all see those rumors?

KAUFMAN Well you know what they say, rumors make an ass out of you and me.

    CASALEGNO I think that’s assume.

    KAUFMAN Why would you assume?

CASALEGNO I haven’t heard them! First time i’m hearing it!

    KAUFMAN (To Rain… ) You’re pregnant?

    SPENCER No!

    KAUFMAN You saw it?

SPENCER I saw that one. People were like, “See! She’s not drinking!” And people were like, “She was drinking!”

    KAUFMAN That’s crazy!
