Star Cast: Lakshya, Bobby Deol, Sahher Bambba
Web Series Review: THE BA***DS OF BOLLYWOOD is a hilarious and entertaining take on Bollywood
Director: Aryan Khan
Synopsis:
THE BA***DS OF BOLLYWOOD is the story of an outsider trying to be a Hindi film hero. Aasmaan Singh (Lakshya) is originally from Delhi and the son of Rajat (Vijayant Kohli) and Neeta (Mona Singh). He arrives in Mumbai and stays with his uncle, Avtar (Manoj Pahwa). While Neeta tried to be a film heroine in the 90s, Avtar aspired to be a music composer. Both failed, but Aasmaan managed to sign a film named Revolver that too with veteran producer Freddy Sodawallah (Manish Chaudhari). Revolver becomes a hit and at the success bash, Freddy insists that he signs an exclusive three-film contract with Sodawallah Productions. Aasmaan’s manager-cum-friend Sanya (Anyaa Singh) asks him to wait and think about it. Afraid that he might lose out on a good opportunity, Aasmaan signs the deal and hides it from Sanya. Sanya persuades Karan Johar (Karan Johar) to sign Aasmaan for his next grand film. Karan takes some time, but he agrees. Aasmaan is now in a fix. He still goes ahead and starts working on Karan’s film. His co-star in the film is Karishma (Sahher Bambba), the daughter of popular star Ajay Talvar (Bobby Deol). Ajay doesn’t want her daughter to work with Aasmaan and fears that they might fall for each other. Hence, he attempts to get Aasmaan out of KJo’s film. Meanwhile, Freddy is also upset with Aasmaan for breaking the contract. What happens next forms the rest of the show.
The Ba***ds Of Bollywood Story Review:
Aryan Khan, Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan’s story is crazy and entertaining. Aryan Khan, Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan’s screenplay is very engaging. There’s not a single dull moment as so much is happening every second. But the writing has some loose ends. Aryan Khan’s dialogues (additional dialogues by Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan) are sharp and add to the laughter.
Aryan Khan’s direction is supreme. It’s commendable that he managed so much in his debut venture. The way he has executed the scenes and also nicely stitched all the tracks together is praiseworthy. His biggest strength is humour. He has taken a lot of digs at the industry and also incorporated plot points that are very relevant. Of course, he goes overboard and that’s the idea. Thankfully, it works well. He also does justice to the many cameos in the show, which is a USP. Lastly, Aryan reserves the best for the climax. It is totally unexpected and will shock the audience.
On the flipside, the show gives a deja vu of LUCK BY CHANCE, especially the track of an outsider actor falling in love with a star kid. A few more instances are such that one might draw parallels to popular films. The writing is not strong in some scenes and leaves viewers bewildered. This happens in the very first scene. Why does the stunt double and Aasmaan perform a dangerous stunt without cables? It makes for a good intro scene but is not convincing. What is also not convincing is how Karishma had no idea about how the media misinterpreted the Goa episode for many hours. She has a smartphone and there’s no way she wasn’t informed by anyone about it, even though it went viral. Speaking of smartphones, Aasmaan not buying a device for a week after losing it is difficult to digest. Lastly, the product placement in a few scenes is laughable.
The Ba***ds Of Bollywood Performances:
Lakshya plays the lead role with elan. The fact that he, too, is an outsider makes it even better. Bobby Deol gets a bit in the ANIMAL zone but overall, his performance is superb. Sahher Bambba looks lovely and delivers a first-rate performance. Anyaa Singh is terrific; both these actresses deserve to be seen more. Raghav Juyal (Parvaiz) is the jaan of the show. Last time, both Lakshya and Raghav were out there to kill each other (in KILL; 2024). Here, both play close friends and their scenes are entertaining. Rajat Bedi (Jaraj Saxena) and Manoj Pahwa steal the show. Mona Singh and Vijayant Kohli have crucial parts and they do well. Karan Johar, Manish Chaudhari and Meherzan Mazda (Jeejeebhoy) lend able support. Gautami Kapoor (Anu; Ajay’s wife) and Sukhwinder Singh Grewal (Sukhi; bodyguard) are decent and don’t get much scope. Divik Sharma (Shaumik; Karishma’s brother) is great in the role of a crazy character. His character reminds of the part played by Prateik Babbar in JAANE TU…YA JAANE NA [2008], but on steroids. Arshad Warsi (Gafoor) is damn good in a cameo. Lastly, of all the cameos, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh stand out.
The Ba***ds Of Bollywood music and other technical aspects:
Songs are well placed at regular interviews. ‘Revolver’ and ‘Ghafoor’ stand out. The background score is exhilarating. Jay Pinak Oza’s cinematography is fair. Donald Reagen Gracy, Anita Rajagopalan Lata and Dipankar Dasgupta’s production design is classy, while Mohit Rai and Shaleena Nathani’s costumes are glamorous. RedChillies.VFX’s VFX is a bit tacky, especially in the chase sequence, but is superb in a crucial point in the climax. Nitin Baid’s editing is slick.
The Ba***ds Of Bollywood Review Conclusion:
On the whole, THE BA***DS OF BOLLYWOOD is a hilarious and entertaining take on Bollywood and works because of Aryan Khan’s expert direction, crazy-n-entertaining moments, performances, shocking climax and starry cameos.
