In a tragic turn of events, a 71-year-old US woman was allegedly killed by her 75-year-old lover. As per multiple reports, Rupinder Kaur Pandher, a woman based in the US, fell in love with Charanjit Singh Grewal, a non-resident Indian from England, who originally hailed from Ludhiana.
Rupinder Kaur Pandher went missing after reaching India
The incident dates back to July 2025, when Rupinder Kaur Pandher, based in Seattle, travelled to Punjab at the invitation of Charanjit Singh Grewal. The 75-year-old NRI promised Rupinder that he would marry her. However, as soon as Rupinder reached Punjab, she was untraceable, and her phone too was switched off.
Charanjit Singh Grewal got Rupinder Kaur Pandher killed
It was Rupinder Kaur Pandher’s sister, Kamal Kaur Khairah, who informed the US Embassy in Delhi about her sister’s disappearance. A probe was initiated, and searches were conducted. After a lot of searches, Pandher’s remains were recovered from a drain in Ghungrana village near Ludhiana, as well as her badly damaged iPhone.
Police later nabbed Sukhjeet Singh Sonu of Malha Patti for the killing of Rupinder. Sonu confessed to the crime and revealed that he acted on the instructions given by Charanjit Singh Grewal, who lured him with Rs. 50 lakhs.
Rupinder Kaur Pandher transferred a huge sum to Charanjit Singh Grewal for their wedding
Rupinder Kaur Pandher desperately wanted to marry Charanjit Singh Grewal. Unaware of his motive, she transferred Rs. 30 to Rs. 35 lakhs to his account as part of the wedding expenses. However, on July 12, 2025, Charanjit hired Sonu, a typist at the court complex in Kila Raipur, to kill Rupinder. Sonu murdered Rupinder, burned the body, stuffed it into four sacks, and threw it into the drain.
Sonu knew Rupinder as he helped her with a property dispute. Rupinder often stayed at Sonu’s home whenever she visited Ludhiana, and she also gave her power of attorney to.
What was the motive behind Rupinder Kaur Pandher’s murder?
Money was the motive behind Rupinder’s brutal killing. DCP Ludhiana shared details about the murder and said:
“When Charanjit refused to marry her after the transfer of money, he lured Sonu with Rs 50 lakh and asked him to kill Rupinder. However, the amount was not paid to Sonu. The police have deployed a forensic team to collect evidence and are investigating transactions made through Rupinder’s bank accounts. Charanjit Singh Grewal, who is currently in the UK, has been named the main accused in the FIR.”
