The Case Against Adnan Syed is a true-crime docuseries that premiered on HBO on March 10, 2019. Written and directed by Amy J. Berg, the documentary delves into the shocking death of American-Korean high school student, Hae Min Lee followed by the conviction of Adnan Syed, the deceased’s ex-boyfriend.
As new information was discovered in 2022, which significantly altered the case, a follow-up series is set to premiere on HBO on September 18, 2025. This follow-up serves as an epilogue to the story revolving around Adnan Syed and also explores what happened after the documentary was first released in 2019. Amid this, here’s everything to know about the real case and where Adnan Syed is today.
Hae Min Lee’s death and Adnan Syed’s conviction in 1999
An American-Korean high school student, Hae Min Lee, went missing in Baltimore County, Maryland, in 1999. Nearly a month later, her body was found, and an autopsy revealed that the 18-year-old had been strangled to death. As per The Week, the data on the victim’s phone led the police to Adnan Syed, her ex-boyfriend. However, several reports also claim that the authorities were tipped off about Syed by an anonymous caller. After a year-long court battle, a seventeen-year-old Adnan Syed was found guilty of murder, robbery, and kidnapping and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
How did the Serial podcast and The Case Against Adnan Syed help the accused?
Adnan Syed had pleaded not guilty at the time of his arrest, however, he was found guilty by the court. After many failed appeals, nearly fourteen years after his conviction and halfway through his sentence, a true-crime podcast, Serial raised doubts about the case and brought forward evidence which were initially ignored. The podcast revealed that Syed had an alibi in the form of Asia McClain, who stated that she was with the accused at the library when the murder took place. Serial also revealed that although physical evidence was collected, it was never tested to see if it matched Adnan Syed’s DNA.
Following the revelations of Serial, the case received significant attention, and Adnan Syed was granted a new hearing, with more evidence emerging in 2015. Then in 2018, The Case Against Adnan Syed was released, which revealed that new-found evidence regarding the DNA found at the murder site did not match the accused.

Where is Adnan Syed now?
In 2022, prosecutors found issues with the initial conviction of Adnan Syed. It was found out that strong evidence related to two other suspects of the murder was suppressed. One of the suspects had previously threatened to kill Hae Min Lee and reportedly had the motive and the opportunity. The victim’s car was also found parked behind the house of the suspect. Meanwhile, the second suspect was found guilty of assaulting several women while Adnan Syed was serving his sentence. These revelations led to a court setting Syed free in 2022 as issues with the initial evidence were detected.
As of 2025, Adnan Syed is a free man and continues to live in Baltimore as a forty-four-year-old. He has also been reportedly working with a university and taking care of his family, especially his ageing mother. As per a New York Times report, Adnan got married around 2020. There were speculations that he is married to a childhood friend. However, the information regarding Syed’s wife hasn’t been made public. As per a Parade report, Adnan Syed’s mother had once written in a letter to the court:
“He cares so much about our family. He is married and tries to be the best husband he can. He is always trying to help us out anyway that he can. He has tried hard to become a positive member of his community.”
