Merkley stated, “America has a responsibility to lead, and the time to act is now.” He further noted, “The resolution urges U.S. recognition of a demilitarised Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel and would offer both sides hope while boosting prospects for peace, Merkley said.” Despite this initiative, President Donald Trump’s Republican Party continues to hold a 53-47 edge in the Senate, reducing the measure’s likelihood of passage. On Thursday, Trump expressed disagreement with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer about recognition, and no Republican senators have joined this campaign.

Efforts run in parallel in the House of Representatives, where Ro Khanna from California is distributing a letter aimed at gathering support for recognising Palestinian statehood. The Israeli embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Senate resolution also bears the names of Democrats Chris Van Hollen, Tim Kaine, Peter Welch, Tina Smith, Tammy Baldwin, Mazie Hirono, along with independent senator Bernie Sanders, who is aligned with the Democrats.
