A Black college student was found dead hanging from a tree on the campus of Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, this week, leading to appeals from civil rights advocates for a comprehensive investigation. While police have currently ruled out foul play, the incident has reignited scrutiny around racial violence in the state and prompted demands for federal oversight.

Demartravion “Trey” Reed, aged 21, was discovered early on Monday near the pickleball courts at Delta State University’s campus. Campus police chief Michael Peeler described the case as an “isolated incident” and emphasised that there was no ongoing threat to students or faculty.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation, with the FBI confirming it is prepared to become involved “if, during the course of the local investigation, information comes to light of a potential federal violation.”

OFFICIAL FINDINGS AND ONGOING AUTOPSY

The local coroner’s office stated there was no evidence suggesting Reed had been physically attacked or assaulted before his death. The office added that further details would be provided “once the autopsy results are finalised.” Reed’s body was sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for a formal autopsy report.

Mississippi Democratic US Representative Bennie Thompson has called for a federal investigation into Reed’s death, stating, “We must leave no stone unturned in the search for answers. While the details of this case are still emerging, we cannot ignore Mississippi’s painful history of lynching and racial violence against African Americans,” according to his statement.

FAMILY RETAINS CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY

Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney known for his representation in high-profile cases involving Black Americans, has been retained by Reed’s family. On X, Crump said the family “cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain.” Crump further stated, “I stand with this family, and I will lead a team of civil rights leaders and organisations in pursuing transparency and answers for Trey’s family.” The family is also seeking an independent autopsy as part of their pursuit for more information.

Delta State University has a total enrolment of over 2,600 students, with more than 40 per cent identifying as Black. The university confirmed that all relevant agencies are participating in the investigation and is providing support to students and staff during this period.
