A court in Mohali has quashed the First Information Report (FIR) filed against artist Yo Yo Honey Singh, relating to alleged objectionable lyrics in his 2018 song ‘Makhna’. The decision in this six-year-old case came after both original complainants, Punjab State Women’s Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati and ASI Lakhwinder Kaur, stated they had no objection to closing the case. The FIR, filed at Mataur police station, was under legal review in the National Lok Adalat, which accepted the closure report, effectively bringing the case to an end.
The case was filed at Mataur police station in Mohali under IPC Sections 294 and 509, Section 67 of the IT Act, and Section 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The complaints focused on certain words used in the song ‘Makhna’, which they claimed were objectionable. The case, after being filed, was referred to the National Lok Adalat held in Mohali for further proceedings.
Hearings in the case took place at the National Lok Adalat in Mohali. During these proceedings, both ASI Lakhwinder Kaur and Manisha Gulati submitted their statements regarding the matter. ASI Lakhwinder Kaur had earlier recorded her statement in 2014, and Manisha Gulati gave hers in 2025. Both indicated they would not object if the matter was closed. This development paved the way for the submission of the closure report.
Both original complainants categorically expressed their lack of objection to the closure of the FIR. The complainants communicated to the court that, “If a closure report is filed in this matter, they have no objection.” This statement was pivotal in the court’s decision to accept the closure report and terminate legal proceedings against Yo Yo Honey Singh.
The closure report was submitted to the National Lok Adalat, following the statements made by the complainants. The court reviewed and accepted the report, thus quashing the FIR against Yo Yo Honey Singh. The process adhered to legal guidelines, with voluntary withdrawal of objections by the original complainants being central to the decision.
The FIR filed in 2019 sparked widespread debate over song lyrics and their influence on society. Back then, the Punjab Women’s Commission had even suggested a ban on the track, calling its content objectionable. Now, with the Lok Adalat’s ruling, the long-pending case against Honey Singh has officially been closed.
