Model-turned-actor Muzammil Ibrahim recently revisited the long-standing casting conversation around Ayan Mukerji’s hit film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. In a new interview with Hindi Rush, Muzammil addressed what he called a “misunderstanding” regarding the script and clarified that he had later spoken to the director about the situation.

Speaking about the events leading up to the film’s casting, Muzammil shared: “I think it got stuck at casting. I spoke to Ayan about it later, and we clarified it as well. It was a misunderstanding. I was expecting Ayan to send me the script, but he didn’t. And perhaps it was my fault too—I didn’t follow up and ask for it, even though he had said he would give it to me.” He added that communication with the director had shifted to the casting team, which may have led to the confusion: “That communication was being done via the casting people, even though Ayan and I were very good friends at the time. We had been discussing the process, but when it came to casting, I don’t know how they handled the communication. Even the casting guys play a lot of games.”
When Muzammil Suggested Deepika Padukone’s Name
This isn’t the first time Muzammil has spoken about his early involvement with the film. In an earlier appearance on Siddharth Kannan’s podcast, he revealed that Ayan Mukerji was considering him for the role eventually played by Aditya Roy Kapur—Avi, Bunny’s best friend in the film. He also mentioned how he had suggested Deepika Padukone—his then-girlfriend—to Ayan for the female lead: “Ayan liked me a lot. He told me he was writing Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani with me in mind. He would often discuss casting—whether he should cast Deepika Padukone or Katrina Kaif. We were very close. Deepika was the right fit for the film, and I told him that.” Muzammil also recalled how Kiran Rao had appreciated his performance in his debut film Dhokha, and that positive feedback may have contributed to Ayan’s early interest.

Released in 2013, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani became one of the biggest commercial successes of the decade. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Kalki Koechlin, the film explored themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery, centered around a group of friends who reconnect during a trek in Manali. Deepika played Naina, a shy medical student, while Ranbir’s character Bunny was a free-spirited traveller. The film was praised for its emotional depth, catchy soundtrack, and strong performances.
While Muzammil Ibrahim did not end up being part of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, he has now clarified the situation publicly, calling it an honest miscommunication. His candid reflections offer insight into the unpredictable and often complex nature of casting in the film industry.
