Anurag Kashyap’s latest directorial venture Bandar (Monkey in a Cage), starring Bobby Deol and Sanya Malhotra, is creating ripples after its screening at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film not only generated immense buzz at the prestigious event but also trended globally on social media as #BANDARinTIFF, with fans and critics hailing it as Kashyap’s most raw and bold work yet.
Nikhil Dwivedi reveals how Anurag Kashyap came on board for Bandar at TIFF 2025; says, “He read it and he said, ‘I’m directing it’”
But how did Kashyap actually come on board as director? Producer Nikhil Dwivedi recently shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story. When he was asked how the story came to him and how Anurag Kashyap came on board as a director, he shared, “I stumbled upon a piece of work which was written by someone. About this event that happened. This series of events that happened. Something moved me in it. I started to look for writers. Anurag is always usually the first choice for writing something. But he was already writing something with me. And I didn’t want to divert his attention. So, I rushed to Sudeep Sharma to write it. He wrote something which was very interesting. I wanted Anurag to co-produce this film with me, actually. He read it and he said, I’m directing it. And who says no to Anurag then? So, yeah.’”
Known for cult classics like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, and Ugly, Kashyap brings his signature unflinching storytelling to Bandar. While Bobby will be seen playing a never-seen-before character, Sanya Malhotra is expected to feature in a heart-rending avatar. The ensemble further features Saba Azad as a fierce young woman, Sapna Pabbi in a surprising role, and Wamiqa Gabbi too whose character is quite pivotal to the storyline.
Actor-producer Nikhil Dwivedi, who earlier backed unique projects like Veere Di Wedding and CTRL, continues his streak of supporting bold and unconventional cinema. Bandar is penned by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, with Kashyap’s direction already placing it among the most talked-about Indian films on the global stage.
