Manoj Bajpayee is one of the most popular actors of Hindi cinema. He rose to prominence with the 1998 crime drama, Satya, where he played a gangster. Currently, the actor is making headlines for his Netflix film, Inspector Zende. However, in a recent interview, he opened up about how filmmakers have been typecasting him. He shared that many directors believe he is capable of playing only villain roles. He also shared the example of Tillotama Shome, who has been getting typecast in many films as a maid after Monsoon Wedding.
Manoj Bajpayee talks about Tillotama Shome getting typecast
In a recent interview with News18, The Family Man actor talked about actress, Tillotama Shome, who has often been cast in maid roles after her debut in Monsoon Wedding. For the uninitiated, Tillotama portrayed ‘Alice’, a maid. Manoj said that he finds her very attractive. He added that it’s very unfair to blame actors for such typecasting. In his words:
“I find her very good-looking. What’s the problem with her face? Kuch bhi! It’s not an actor’s fault. We need to understand that.”
Manoj Bajpayee takes a dig at filmmakers who stereotyped him in villain roles
In the same interview, Manoj expressed how he has also been getting typecast. He shared that it was not his fault if the filmmakers offered him only villain roles due to his looks. The Inspector Zende actor said that it is simply a matter of their lack of vision. Taking a dig at the filmmakers, Manoj said:
“It’s not my fault if I look the way I look. If someone comes to me with only villain roles, it’s not my fault. It’s the lack of the vision of the filmmaker or the person who’s offering me that!”
Further in the interview, The Family Man actor shared that in his own eyes, he finds himself very attractive, whereas the filmmakers are stuck with stereotypes and believe someone like him can only portray villains. He mentioned that he doesn’t feel insulted by their views, rather, he laughs at the limited capacity they possess. He was quoted as saying:
“In my eyes, I’m very sexy, but they’re so restricted by stereotypes that they feel that a person like me can only play villain roles. And I don’t find their thoughts of me insulting. Rather, I find myself laughing at them and their limited capacity of looking at films and actors. I really look sexy. It’s just that they can’t see that sexiness in me.”
