For decades, fans of serious cinema have often wondered what it would look like if two of Hollywood’s most enigmatic leading men—Benicio Del Toro and Leonardo DiCaprio—finally shared the screen. With the upcoming action-thriller One Battle After Another, that dream pairing has at last become a reality. Del Toro, who plays the mysterious and formidable Sensei Sergio St. Carlos in the film, opened up exclusively about working alongside DiCaprio, describing the experience as both long overdue and unexpectedly playful.

“I think Leo is very funny in this movie. He’s funny in real life,” Del Toro said. “I’ve known him for a long time, and this is the first time we worked together. I admire his work. There’s mutual respect. We’ve been making movies now for a long time, both of us. If Hollywood was a university, we’re from the same class in a way.”
That mutual history, Del Toro says, made their first collaboration all the more rewarding. With DiCaprio playing Bob, a desperate father searching for his missing daughter while being hunted by a lethal adversary, the Oscar-winner tapped into a nervous, almost combustible energy that Del Toro relished responding to.
“He brought that nervous energy to his character, Bob,” Del Toro explained. “His daughter has gone missing, and he’s got limited resources to find her while at the same time being chased by a formidable and dangerous villain. It was just fun to work with someone like Leo, who’s a great actor. All I had to do was catch what Leo was throwing my way. Basically, part of my job was to sit front row and enjoy watching Leo bring Bob to life.”
The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, pits DiCaprio’s everyman against Del Toro’s layered antagonist in a high-stakes chase that unfolds across multiple continents. While the narrative promises plenty of grit and adrenaline, Del Toro emphasized the trust and camaraderie he shared with DiCaprio behind the scenes, something that he believes will translate on screen.
“We’ve been friends for a long time, and so that helps that trust,” Del Toro said.
With both actors known for their ability to inhabit complex, morally ambiguous roles, One Battle After Another has quickly become one of the year’s most anticipated releases. For Del Toro, the experience was a reminder of why audiences still flock to see veteran stars at the top of their game. “Sometimes, the best part of acting is just reacting,” he said with a grin. “And with Leo, you know you’re reacting to something real.”
