Filmmaker Karan Johar has expressed immense pride and gratitude as his production, Homebound, clinched the Second Runner-Up position at the 2025 International People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan, garnered global appreciation for its compelling narrative and stellar performances.

In an emotional Instagram post, Johar shared the film’s poster, featuring lead actors Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. He described the recognition as “surreal,” emphasizing the significance of audience choice. “Always more special when it’s the people’s choice… Homebound, our film is a story we are all so so proud of and to see it being loved, accepted and appreciated across the globe, across language or any barriers – it is surreal! A big thank you to @tiff_net for giving us the platform,” Johar wrote.
Johar also extended his gratitude to Neeraj Ghaywan for the opportunity to be part of the project. “Congratulations to the entire team – this is only the beginning. Thank you @neeraj.ghaywan for allowing us to be a part of your labour of love,” he added.
Homebound tells the story of two childhood friends from a small village in North India who aspire to become police officers, hoping the job will bring them the respect they never had. As they approach their goal, societal pressures and personal struggles challenge their friendship.
The film’s success at TIFF follows its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. With the backing of executive producer Martin Scorsese, Homebound has garnered significant international attention and is poised for a broader release.
Looking ahead, Johar’s next production, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, is set to release on December 31, 2025, two months ahead of its original schedule.
