In an interview with Komal Nahta, Aamir Khan opened up about his 2022 film, Laal Singh Chaddha. He mentioned the budget, what went wrong and a lot more.
Aamir Khan CONFESSES, “Before Laal Singh Chaddha went on floors, I knew it would earn Rs. 125 cr tops but our cost went up to Rs. 200 cr”; reveals that a table tennis scene set in China was removed from final cut
Aamir began by saying, “I apply a filter – I’ll make the film that my heart wishes, but I should not go into a loss while doing so. Those who have invested their money should recover and potentially even earn a profit. However, I didn’t put that filter on Laal Singh Chaddha. Before the shoot, I told Advait (director Advait Chandan) that this is not a mainstream film and listed out three reasons for it.”
Aamir continued, “Firstly, the premise should be an affirmative sentence with an action in it. But in Laal Singh Chaddha, the premise is a question. This film asks, are you in control of your life? Or are you like a feather; hawa ka jhoka aata hai toh aap wahaan chale jaate ho. When the premise is a question mark, it can’t be mainstream because the audience clearly wants to know who is right and who is wrong. Secondly, the film doesn’t follow the plot. It follows the character. We are following Laal Singh’s journey. It’s not streamlined. It’s meandering. The audience can lose interest as it’s not going from point to point. Thirdly, all the subplots should get over earlier. Once you have completed the main plot, your film should conclude within 2 minutes. Since Laal Singh was a child, he wanted to marry Rupa. Once Rupa insists on marriage, the film gets over there. Laal ka goal achieve ho gaya hai. Yet, our film goes on for 15 more minutes (smiles). Kyunki film ka jo theme hai, woh graveyard scene pe aata hai. These 3 points proved that this is not a mainstream film.”
Aamir Khan also confessed, “I got overconfident. So many of my films had become hits that I thought that (this film would also work). Woh galat kiya maine. If you had asked me before the film went on floors about the lifetime of Laal Singh Chaddha, I would have said it would do 1/3rd the business of Dangal (2016). Dangal collected Rs. 385 crores. So, Laal Singh Chaddha should have done around Rs. 100-125 crores tops. Accordingly, we should have made this film in a budget of Rs. 80 crores maximum. But our cost went up to Rs. 200 crores!”
Aamir Khan further said, “This is because I didn’t apply the filter. Secondly, we were affected by COVID-19. I didn’t stop payments to my workers; unka ghar bhi chalna chahiye. That increased our cost. We decided to shoot abroad during COVID times as we wanted to complete the filming. It led to the wastage of money. We had shot a scene of Laal Singh playing table tennis in China. It was removed from the final cut.”
